Chiba Prefecture officers have arrested 14 foreign nationals on charges of illegally staying even after the visa expired from an apartment complex in Asahi city. The group had men and women aged 20 to 50, who are citizens of Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia. One of them has been avoiding the immigration authority for almost seven years.

13 out of the 14 detained entered Japan on short-term tourist visas, and one came through a technical intern training program, according to investigators. Later handed over to Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau. The detained admit they were living by doing local farming.

This incident highlighted a major challenge in regional. Chiba Prefecture recently ranked second in the number of undocumented workers working illegally, according to the immigration services agency. Authorities are now expanding the investigation further, because their suspicion—such undocumented immigrants may be in residential centre area elsewhere.
