Arisa Kawai Exhibition 川井 有紗
This will be the fourth exhibition by Arisa Kawai at utsushiki since we first opened.
Although this marks the fourth time we have presented her work, Arisa Kawai’s expression has never remained within a single form.
Beginning with jewelry made from plants and minerals, she has explored live painting in response to musicians’ performances, immersed herself deeply in music, and eventually moved toward painting and three-dimensional works.
Almost as if refusing to let herself be defined by an image of “the kind of work Arisa Kawai makes,” she continues to follow wherever her inner sense of direction leads her at each moment.
These changes are not simply a matter of whim.
What do I want to make?
What do I want to continue making?
Is there anything being lost as I make more and more?
From where I stand now, is it truly right to keep moving forward as I have been?
With every work she creates, she poses questions to herself, transforming the answers into the next form of her expression.
If establishing a distinct artistic style is considered a sign of maturity for an artist, then Arisa Kawai’s path might appear to deliberately slip beyond the boundaries of such a definition.
Change is frightening.
It may mean letting go of everything one has built up until now.
Others may ask, “Why have you changed?”
And yet, perhaps more frightening is to silence the voice within and remain the person you were yesterday.
By continually changing her work, Arisa Kawai continues to question how she herself wants to exist.
This will be her fourth exhibition at utsushiki.
The works presented here are not an attempt to summarize the Arisa Kawai of the past.
They are expressions born from where she stands now.
Without fearing change, she continues to move forward, toward whatever lies beyond.
We invite you to encounter her current point of departure.
