The Wacky Celebration of Vulnerability and Why You Should Reject It

Vulnerable
1: capable of being physically or emotionally wounded
2: capable of or susceptible to being attacked, damaged, or hurt
3: open to moral attack, criticism, temptation, etc.
4: willing to show emotion or to allow one’s weaknesses to be seen or known

Accessible
1: capable of being reached
2: easy to speak to or deal with
3: capable of being understood or appreciated
4: capable of being influenced

Despite what academia would have you believe, it is clear that weakness is inherent in vulnerability.

When people can see you’re physically fit, it tells them that you’re proactive. It signals that you embrace responsibility and weakens the natural inclination some would have to distrust you.

2 | Discipline
People know that maintaining an impressive body requires frequently training, so they perceive you to be highly disciplined. It signals that you’re reliable under challenging conditions and over the long haul.

3 | Confidence
A straight back and shoulders. A long stride. A gaze set forward instead of down. These fundamentals of good posture project confidence from a mile away. Picking up on your confident air, others will be more primed to listen and cooperate with you.

4 | Competence
Your confidence hints that you’re also competent. The impression is that whatever it is that you do, you do it well.

5 | Energy
When you train consistently, you become more energetic, and abundant energy is magnetic. It draws people to you because it radiates positivity.

But it’s still up to you to demonstrate these qualities. Ultimately, the proof is in your behavior and how you follow through.

Have you ever thought about how spotting someone can help you understand relationships better?

As a spotter, you’re there as a helper, and your focus is on what the lifter can achieve.

Spotting shows (1) caring and (2) compassion, and it builds (3) connection and (4) community. This is the 4C framework for networking that can help anyone become a person of influence.

Here’s the bottom line if you want to be a better networker: it’s about how you can help. Be a helper first, and the other person is more likely to want to help you out in return.

You can almost certainly press 30 kg without focusing very much, but press 150 kg, and nothing else matters in that moment. It’s because heavier weight necessarily sharpens your focus.

The key is that you must commit to lift before you attempt it. Invariably, you find that the amount of resistance you face and your level of focus are positively correlated.

On any given day, opportunities abound for your mind to wander. The world is full of distractions whose purpose is to keep you entertained and comfortable. But your time is invaluable, and comfort becomes a problem when it lulls you into complacency.

Think of discomfort as a heavy weight, but not necessarily due to the difficulty of doing something. Many times, it’s due to unfamiliarity with it, and overcoming your internal resistance is the real struggle.

Not everything you must do to elevate yourself or impact other people will be pleasant or easy. Do what others don’t and won’t do, and face up to the resistance. Commit first, and your focus will follow.

Proper form is about no wasted effort and maximal effect with every rep. You’re not just moving weight.

The point of targeting a muscle is to train it effectively. Ideally, no effort is misdirected, and every rep is a building block towards growing or strengthening the muscle.

If that is true inside the gym, it must be equally true outside of it. So how’s your form outside of the gym?

If you’re not making progress despite working on things, it’s likely because you’re doing things with poor form. They're efforts that are ineffective.

It’s time to ask yourself how much of the time you’re spinning your wheels or how often you’re busy for the sake of being busy. Think about the things you might be doing without thinking about them.

It’s not easy to be efficient and effective all the time. But if you’re a producer, you’ve got to keep perfecting your form.
