Dogu and Adobe but why.... ()…?

On June 6th, DOGU NOVA had the great honor of working with Adobe and Adobe Creative Club Japan (.jp) for a DOGU workshop with 14 participants.

This workshop featured choosing DOGU molds brought from our studio in Gunma, and recreating their own DOGU. Many of the participants were designers, artists, photographers, and art-related people, which made each original DOGU unique.

During this workshop, many people were concentrating so much they forgot about taking pictures, an absolute technology-free experience. In this world of noise, we have been dedicated to creating DOGU. We believe people experienced the zone during the workshop.

We hope this experience continues to serve as a gentle message: move your hands, make things, sometimes love and respect yourself through detoxing. As craftsmen, we can’t stop, we just love designing and doing something creative 24/7. Though, people 5000 years ago, still made.

Creating a real thing.

The world moves further into AI and screens. What gets made by hand keeps shrinking, and something quieter fades along with it. The sense of why a maker keeps making, and what that making holds and whats bold.

To create is to get your hands dirty.
To put the phone down for a while.

For DOGU NOVA x Adobe Creative Club Japan, a workshop brought hands back to clay, the way it was worked long before any of this, back in the Jomon era. No screen. No plan beyond a shape and two hands.

Dogu carries that memory forward, made now the same way it was made then.

This work was by Noa created her dogu as a tribute to the female body and the quiet strength it holds. Inspired by the experience of motherhood, she wanted the figure to celebrate every mark that becomes part of a woman’s story—whether stretch marks, a C-section scar, or any other trace left behind through bringing life into the world. Rather than seeing these changes as something to hide, she views them as symbols of resilience, care, and transformation. For Noa, the body and the child are forever connected. The experiences of pregnancy and birth become part of who a person is, leaving both visible and invisible memories that deserve to be embraced. Through her dogu, she expresses gratitude for the body that makes new life possible, honoring its beauty not despite its changes, but because of them.

This work was by Furutakabu used the Goggle-Eyed Dogu as the foundation for his piece, reimagining the figure through the lens of his own cultural background. Having practiced “Nihon Buyō” from an early age, he transformed the body into a flowing kimono, bringing an element of traditional Japanese performance into the ancient form. The kimono becomes the defining feature of the sculpture, com- plemented by the hiragana character 「た」 on the head—a subtle reference to his last name, “Takabu”. Together, these details create a personal interpretation that connects his own history with one of Japan’s oldest artistic traditions.

This work was by Laura began by carefully following the original form of the dogu, ini- tially focusing on removing the mold lines and preserving its shape. As the process unfolded, however, she allowed herself to work more intuitively, responding to the clay rather than sticking to a fixed plan. When the back of the figure felt too empty, she added a flowing hairstyle—a detail inspired in part by her own short hair, which she is currently growing out. She also emphasized the figure’s feminine form, drawing inspiration from the themes of motherhood and womanhood. Rather than dra- matically altering the original dogu, Laura let small, personal deci- sions gradually shape the piece. The result is a figure that balances respect for the original with quiet traces of her own identity.

This work was by .h.c__ Yuria, a collage artist, approached her dogu in the same way she approaches her own creative practice. Instead of working with a single figure, she combined two separate dogu into one, creating an unexpected composition that reflects her instinct for layering and assembling disparate elements into a new whole.

This work was by . “This was my first encounter with Dogū. Before this workshop, they were just ancient objects in books. Thanks to Adobe Creative Club and Dogu Nova, they became something I could hold, shape, and
understand with my own hands. There’s something strangely familiar about working with clay. It strips away everything we’ve built around ourselves. No screens. No undo button. Just your hands, the clay, and the same impulses we’ve carried for thousands of years. I kept coming back to horns and masks. Long before we feared deadlines, algorithms, or unread emails, we feared the dark, the unknown, the things we couldn’t name. We carved faces to confront them. We gave fear a shape so we could look it in the eye. Maybe that’s what art has always been. A way of leaving finger- prints on mystery. Clay just happened to be one of the first languages we ever spoke.”

Izutsu-san chose a simple haniwa as the starting point for his piece, transforming it into a tribute to his beloved dog, who had been by his side for many years. Rather than recreating the figure as it was, he reimagined it through a deeply personal memory. The heart-shaped pendant around its neck symbolizes the bond they shared, expressing the lasting affection and companionship that continues beyond their time together.

On June 6th, DOGU NOVA had the great honor of working with Adobe and Adobe Creative Club Japan (.jp) for a DOGU workshop with 14 participants.

This work was by approaching her DOGU with a spirit of spontaneity. While waiting for the face mold, she decided not to wait as all choosing instead to sculpt her own interpretation from scratch. Amazing piece, and apologies for making you wait...

This work was by .jpg, Aishy approached the workshop with no prior experience in ceramics, making every step of the process a new discovery. At first, he wanted to focus on adding personal details, but soon realized that understanding the material itself came first. As he became more comfortable working with the clay, he found himself slowing down, carefully smoothing the surface and paying close attention to the legs, where he spent much of his time refining the form.

ARCHIVE 001: Original DOGU made by Adobe x DOGU, Community Club members.

This work was by , dogu form before gradually reshaping it into something entirely her own. Rather than following a fixed plan, she transformed the figure intuitively, altering the face and layering it with personal details, including a small child figure, emphasized breasts, and a cigarette representing her husband.
Each addition emerged naturally throughout the making process, turning the original form into a deeply personal expression.
