Did you know the two faces of a Japanese Genno have different roles?

At first glance, they may look almost the same—but look closer.

🔨 The flat face is used for driving the nail.

🔨 The slightly rounded face is used for the final strikes, helping reduce the chance of leaving hammer marks on the wood around the nail.

Two faces, each designed for a purpose.

It's a small detail, but one that reflects the thoughtful design of traditional Japanese woodworking tools.

Sometimes, woodworking isn't about finishing a project.

It's about slowing down.

This little acorn was carved from a single block of wood using only Japanese Kiridashi knives.

If you noticed the knife changing hands, there is a reason.

A traditional single-bevel Kiridashi cuts differently depending on which face of the blade is against the wood.

Using both left- and right-handed knives gives you better control, whether you're removing material quickly or making delicate finishing cuts.

But honestly…

Sometimes it's nice to forget about techniques for a while.

Just a sharp knife, a piece of wood, and a quiet moment.

We compared the kerf widths of KAKURI Japanese saws.

Saws tested:
• Ryoba Saw 270 mm
• Ryoba Saw 210 mm
• Dozuki Saw 210 mm – Sakura Handle
• Dozuki Saw 150 mm
• Flush Cut Saw 180 mm

Why does a narrower kerf matter?

A narrower kerf allows for more precise cuts, making it ideal for fine woodworking and joinery.

Surprisingly, the Dozuki Saw 210 mm – Sakura Handle produced the narrowest kerf—even narrower than the Flush Cut Saw, despite the latter having no tooth set.

This is exactly the kind of performance expected from a Dozuki saw, which is designed for precision work.

Why is the neck bent?

A standard chisel can struggle when the handle hits the workpiece, especially when paring the bottom of narrow grooves, recesses, or dovetail grooves.

The KAKURI Kote Nomi Chisel uses a cranked neck to keep the handle away from the surface, helping the blade reach where a straight chisel may not.

Use it by hand. Pare slowly.
A quiet tool for careful finishing.
