A miniature portable shrine (厨子, zushi) housing a seated Dainichi Nyorai (大日如来) — the cosmic Buddha of Esoteric Buddhism. Carved wood with gilt interior, flame mandorla, and an exceptionally refined multi-tiered openwork pedestal.

Of rare devotional significance: a sacred relic (仏舎利) is preserved within a small reliquary chamber at the base of the pedestal.

Japan, Edo period, 17th–18th century. H. 17 cm.

Aizen Myōō (愛染明王) — Edo Period
A rare and exceptional polychrome wooden sculpture of Aizen Myōō, the ta***ic deity of love and desire transformed into enlightenment. Standing on a rocky base, the six-armed figure is rendered in rich polychrome — red skin, gold and blue robes with painted arabesques — with natural rock crystal eyes. The gilded circular nimbus, suspended metal jewellery, and cut-metal flame attributes remain intact.

Polychrome sculptures of this scale and iconographic completeness are seldom encountered in this state of preservation. Some pigment lifting is visible on the face and torso.

H. approx. 53 cm. Edo period, 17th–18th century.

A Pair of Komainu.
Two carved wooden guardian lions (komainu, 狛犬) in the a-un tradition — one horned, one without. Powerfully carved in a bold, provincial style with remnants of white gofun pigment. The extreme weathering of the wood and the archaic vigour of the forms are consistent with a Muromachi period (14th–16th century).
