ー デザインスタジオpolarisが日本と英国で挑む、社会に「寛容さ」を育むための実践

分断が加速し、他者を理解することが難しくなっている現代。東京とロンドンを拠点とする出版・デザインスタジオ「polaris」は、デザインや出版を単なるビジュアル表現ではなく、社会変革を促す触媒として捉えて活動してきました。
今回のトークセッションでは、polarisのメンバーがROUTE BOOKSに登壇し、日英両国で取り組む「寛容さを育むための実践」について語ります。
当日は、ロンドンの刑務所発のHIP HOPレーベルや戦時下のウクライナのアーティストなどを取材した思想的旅メディア『polaris』の活動をはじめ、英国THE BIG ISSUEとの共同プロジェクト『The Little Big Issue』、若者たちの生き方を探索する『26歳の叡智』、さらに武蔵野美術大学やRoyal College of Artといった日英のアカデミアとの連携まで、幅広くご紹介します。
これらはすべて、デザインを美しさの追求に留めず、社会介入の力へと転換させる「Society-Driven Design（社会駆動型デザイン）」の試みです。分断の時代において、編集とデザインがいかに個人の物語が芽吹く余白を作り出せるのか、その可能性をぜひ一緒に体感してください。

In an era of deep divisions, how can creativity respond to society? "polaris," a publishing and design studio based in Tokyo and London, views design and publishing not just as visuals, but as catalysts for social change.
In this talk session, members of polaris will gather at ROUTE BOOKS to discuss their practices of fostering "tolerance" through editing and design across Japan and the UK.
The talk will feature their travel journal "polaris," which uncovers stories from the margins of society—such as a prison hip-hop label in London and wartime artists in Ukraine. They will also share projects like "The Little Big Issue" (UK), "Wisdom of 26" (Japan), and academic collaborations with Musashino Art University and the Royal College of Art.
These initiatives embody "Society-Driven Design"—transforming design into a force for social intervention. Join us to explore how we can create spaces for individual narratives to thrive today.
