I’m grateful to have met Ben, and truly thankful that he so generously agreed to take part in this project.
We are “norm”, a gallery based in Wakayama, Japan.
“norm” presents and offers works primarily by artists based in Japan, including ceramics, wooden works, objects, garments, and paintings, while also organising solo exhibitions with the artists we work closely with. Alongside the activities in our gallery space, we have held a series of popup-style presentations titled “norm exhibitions” in various locations across Japan.
This exhibition is an extension of those ongoing activities and marks our first presentation outside Japan. It will take place at “store acrai” in Antwerp, Belgium.
The occasion for this exhibition arose through “to”, who once worked as a member of the “norm” staff and is now based in the United Kingdom. It is through her presence that “acrai” and “norm” were brought into connection, allowing this project to take shape.
For this popup, we bring together a selection centred on vessels, objects, and textiles that “norm” has introduced in its daily practice, together with stationery works by “to”, forming a shared moment within the space.
The works have been chosen from artists with whom we have built relationships over time. While they carry the material sensibility and quiet presence rooted in Japanese culture, they also hold a resonance that can meet the atmosphere of another place.
With their background in the climate and culture of Japan, the selection was made with the intention that the works may find a natural place within the context of Belgium, where this exhibition is held.
We turn our attention to the subtle sensations that appear between land and living, between living and people, between people and objects.
These works exist as tools for use, yet at the same time as presences that quietly alter the quality of everyday time.
