*CEREAL BUSINESS IDEA IN KENYA – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW*

Africa is a hungry continent and you can never go wrong if you invest in food business. Everyone needs to eat and the escalating rate of rural to urban migration means more new mouths to feed every day.

That is why the idea of starting a cereal shop is a good one. This is one of those businesses that you can start with as little as Ksh.20,000 and scale up to Ksh.1,000,000 in a year if you play your cards right.

Would you like to know more? Read the next few paragraphs.

Note: When i talk about cereals i mean dry grains e.g. maize, beans, green grams, groundnuts etc. Not breakfast cereals like corn flakes.

*Step 1: Getting Started*

First identify an ideal (preferably residential) location. This should be a place that is densely populated. Places like Githurai, Mwiki, Ruai, Kamulu, Thika Makongeni, Mtwapa e.t.c.

Generally open a shop in an area that is densely populated preferably with people of the lower and upper middle class income levels. A good room with enough foot-traffic in these areas can cost you anything from Ksh.5,000 per month.

*Step 2: Plan On What To Stock*

You don’t have to be a farmer to get your stock of cereals. There are many wholesalers who can supply you with your initial stock at a reasonable price (in Nairobi wholesalers are mainly found in Nyamakima area).

Alternatively you can plan for a trip to the rural areas so that you can negotiate for even cheaper prices. For instance, you can get cheaper rice from places like Mwea and Kagio or cheaper maize from Chwele in Western Kenya.

*Tips For Buying Stock*

*Make sure the grains are properly dried to prevent rotting as this could “burn” you.

*Timing is important. For instance, it is cheaper to acquire your maize stock when farmers are looking to empty their granaries awaiting the next harvest.

Some of the fast moving products out of a cereal shop include:

Beans: Nyayo, Rosecoco, Yellow beans, Mwitemania, Butter Beans, Gituru and Gachuma varieties.

Porridge Flour: Baridi, Wimbi, Mawele, Mtama, Ndimu.

Green Grams: Ordinary, Nylon, Makueni, Lentils.

Nuts: Njugu Mawe, Groundnuts.

Rice: Pure Mwea, Thailand, Pakistan, Sindano, Fivestar, Basmati, Brown Mwea.

So now up to this point, you have identified a good location and identified the best places to buy your initial stock. What next?

*Step 3: Get Licensed*

You only need to go to your sub-county offices to get this. The officers there will give you some forms to fill and then they’ll come to visit your premises. Then depending on the size of your premises they will issue you with a single business permit charge.

In some counties like Nairobi, you can book a 3 month, 6 month or 12 month license depending on how flexible you are financially.

*Step 4: Do Business*

It is likely that the first days of opening the shop will be dry days in terms of few customers. But instead of sitting in the cereal store and whining the whole day, the best thing would be to start by visiting institutions around you.

Make friends with the caterers, give them a good deal and they will gradually become your customers. Apply for tenders from local organizations also.

As for the day-to-day customers, sell to them on a cash-only basis – avoid selling on credit. From my research, credit sales are the main cause of failure for small cereal and whole grain outlets.

*How Much To Invest*

Ksh.20,000 – Ksh.80,000

*How Much To Expect*

Returns vary depending on where you buy your stock and how aggressively you resell it. On average you get 25% net profit.

Also think of having a posho mill along side this business so that you can tap more profits.

*Final Word*

The good thing with starting a cereal shop is that unlike other ideas you can start this immediately. Typically, apart from securing a good location, quality stock and the county license there are no other major requirements for starting.

And you don’t have to spend the whole day in the shop to ensure your workers conduct themselves appropriately.

So in other words, you can either start this as a full-time business or as a side-hustle. You only need to invest in stock cards so that you can track how and when every kilo of cereal is bought from your shop.

The returns are however not as mouth-watering as you would expect especially if you are one of those who dream of getting rich overnight.

This is the kind of business where you start small and grow big especially as you build connections with institutions and hotels around your place.

*HOW THIS SUCCESSFUL KENYAN ENTREPRENEUR RAISED CAPITAL FOR HER BUSINESS*

“I don’t have the capital.”

“Nobody wants to give me capital.”

“The banks have turned me down five times.”

These are some of the most common reasons people give for not starting or growing their businesses.

Access to capital is arguably the biggest threat to entrepreneurs around the world. And every year, thousands of passionate people – especially in Africa – give up on their business ideas, projects and dreams just because they can’t find capital.

But is lack of capital really the “serial killer of business dreams” that we claim it is?

In my experience and opinion, lack of capital is largely a convenient excuse. In fact, I have found that capital is actually more abundant and available in today’s world.

The problem is, many entrepreneurs who need capital don’t know where to look for it. That’s why the real problem is actually lack of awareness about where and how to raise capital, and not lack of capital.

Over the last decade, more capital has been flowing into places like Africa like never before. In 2019, the continent received up to $276.5 million in startup funding. In 2021, the number rose to $366.8 million.

And these numbers are just for tech startups alone.

Over the long term, I really don’t see anything that would stop these capital flows from rising higher and higher as the years go by.

In this article, I dispel the myth of capital by showing you an example of a Kenyan entrepreneur who successfully raised funding to start, grow and expand her business.

I don’t just want to give you the facts. Facts can be boring, especially when you are desperately looking for capital.

Instead, I will be sharing the success story that proves just how possible it is to raise capital even in tough and challenging environments like Africa.

And if these woman can find capital in Africa, you can find it too!

But this article isn’t just about a story. It’s about fixing the misconceptions and wrong notions you have always had about raising capital for your business.

*Story of Lorna Rutto*

In 2010, she quit her bank job to start a waste recycling business.

Her company, EcoPost, collects and recycles waste plastic into aesthetic, durable and environmentally-friendly fencing posts that serve as an alternative material to timber.

But her business would have remained a dream without the financial support of international and local investors and NGOs.

Every year, hundreds of international and local organisations support businesses that tackle issues such as environmental pollution, illiteracy, disease and other social problems. They usually provide grants, donations, loans, equity or even training and advice.

The problem is, many African entrepreneurs don’t know about these funding opportunities, and as a result they don’t apply.

So in 2010, Lorna applied for and won a Ksh.600,000 SEED Award which served as start-up capital for her business. In the same year, she won a grant award of Ksh.1.2 million from the Enablis Energy Globe-Safaricom Foundation.

She also won a business plan competition organized by the Cartier Women’s Initiative, and received a prize award of Ksh.1 million.

Recently, her business attracted an equity investment from the Blue Haven Initiative and the Opus Foundation amounting to Ksh.5 million. This was used to expand the business and purchase advanced recycling equipment.

In our upcoming training on Raising Business Capital (more details about the training will be at the end of this article), we shall reveal the reasons why these organisations are eager to support businesses in developing countries by giving away millions of dollars as grants, donations, loans and equity every year.

*Ready to learn how to raise capital?*

Like I said at the beginning of this article, “lack of capital” is not the problem. The real problem is “lack of awareness.”

Thats why we have created a WhatsApp group called, *RAISING BUSINESS CAPITAL*

*HOW TO START A FURNITURE BUSINESS.*

The first thing that catches anyone’s attention after visiting any home is the furniture in it. The color, quality and make of the chairs, tables and wall units make the lounge beautiful. The comfort of the chairs can makes one feel relaxed.

The furniture making business is a lucrative business in Kenya that does not require a lot of startup capital. You only need to have the necessary skills and passion.

The quality and beauty of your furniture will attract customers. Therefore, it is important that you capitalize on that.

When Sammy Njau started Tangerine Furniture business he only had his daily fare to a furniture showroom that he worked for.

Having no capital to start a business has been the bane of many youths in Kenya. As a result countless brilliant ideas get lost along the way, and dreams go unrealized.

But this was never going to deter one determined Kenyan. He started from zero and, hardly a year down the line, his business has grown in into hundreds of thousands.

This is the story of Sammy Njau, a real estate graduate from the University of Nairobi and founder of Tangerine Furniture. He defied many obstacles to pursue his one passion: creating beautiful furniture.

Located in Ngara, on the outskirts of Nairobi city centre, Tangerine offers a variety of furniture from sofa sets, dining sets, coffee tables and even curtains. Here, customers make their unique orders and immediately the technicians swing into action. The has a showroom and its own workshop.

Njau says when he started this modern furniture business he had no capital – just his day’s fare from his house to a furniture showroom that he worked for in at Ngara. “I was just a marketer in another furniture house with no money of my own. All I had was transport to take me from Thika Road to Ngara; but I had an idea, so I had to start with what I had.”

Like most graduates who opt for employment, Sammy too could not resist the temptation. “It was not a re

*DON’T OVERESTIMATE YOUR POTENTIAL PROFIT*

Every entrepreneur will tell you they are allergic to loses. Nobody starts a business to make losses, but to post profits.

There are so many secrets of making profits that most entrepreneurs are not armed with. Such secrets are possessed by entrepreneurs who have made it in life.

A general mistake we all make is to overestimate the amount of money we will make from our business.

Our thought usually goes like, “If I start business A, in the next three months I will make ### amount of money”

Don`t overestimate your possible earning. In fact, I will advise you to instead underestimate.

If you sit down and see that the possible profit you will be making monthly in the next six months is #100,000, then assume it`s going to be #50,000.

Why is this important?

So that you won`t be disappointed if your estimated profit doesn`t work the way you plan.

Many people have walked out of their businesses because of their unhealthy expectations. If you expect too much too soon, if it doesn`t work out, you will be highly depressed and may be tempted to forsake the whole business.

Be reasonable in your expectations.

Making profits means travelling a journey towards wealth and financial freedom, which is why you should follow the following rules:

*1. Don’t mix friendship with business*

In order to make profits, the owner of a business should separate friendship with business; this is the only way you can ensure that your business survives.

Remember some friends are not happy that you are running the business; some of them may be on a mission to finish you so that you can fall to their standard.

Your mind should always focus on business… even if it means losing a friend so as to make profits.

*2. Be consistent*

In business, being predictable is what your customer expects from you. If you are running a restaurant ensure that the food you provide today is the same food you provide tomorrow and in future. You are allowed to add stock but don’t make a mistake of not preparing a meal that was available yesterday unless no one is ordering it.

Always ensure that opening and closing hours of your business is known to customers regardless of circumstances. If you fail to open today, your customer will move to the next shop and if they find the product is the same as yours then you are likely to lose him.

*3. Have the right staff*

Having the right staff is the key ingredient of a successful business. Your staff will either chase away customers or build an empire for you.

Whenever you are seeking staff, conduct the exercise professionally; mixing bribery, nepotism and tribalism may not help you.

It has been proved that most businesses are killed by relatives and people you think they can help you. It’s good to hire someone you are not related because, you will have all the courage to question him/her on issues related to the business than a friend or relative.

The right staffs always know if they mess up your business, they will face the full force of law and no one will interfere, but in most cases if your relatives messes, your community might interfere thus affecting your business.

*4. Monitor every coin that comes from the business*

Business is all about profits unless you are running a Non-profit Organization. In order to make a profit you must monitor every coin that goes in and out of business.

Every day ensure that stock count is done then ensure that your employees explain each and every detail of the transactions. You may not be physically there but you can have efficient systems to monitor the business.

*5. Motivate your employees*

This is where most business owners go wrong and it has resulted to many businesses collapsing.

Once you start treating all employees as thieves, you give them little time to rest, you don’t motivate them with awards, leave, end year party, then know that they will gang against you and kill your business.

Employees can be dangerous and the earlier you realize that they are important the better, otherwise you will regret!

Invest in your employees, give them good salaries and make them feel part of the company, that’s the only way you can see results.

*6. Don’t focus on competitors, focus on the product*

Every business has competitors and if you want to beat the competitors don’t concentrate on what they are doing but concentrate on the quality of the products and services you are offering.

If you focus more on competitors you will lose direction and mess up your business.

*7. Employ strategy*

Strategy is an important aspect of running a successful business. Without strategy, you will not beat competitors.

*8. Sell unique products*

Being unique means standing out. It might take time to break-even but once you have entered the market and people have tested your product, you will make it.

*9. Know the taste of your customers*

Business is all about what customers want not what you think is right for your customers. Once you have identified the taste of your customers, your business will boom.

*Finally*

As I mentioned earlier, don`t over estimate the amount of money you can make in the next one year. Instead, underestimate it.

Plus to that is that you shouldn`t be discouraged by the result you will get when you just start a new business. It takes time for a seed to germinate, grow and bear fruit.

As long as you are committed to your business and keep on learning, you will grow, make much money and transit yourself from being a small business owner to being a successful entrepreneur.

I wish you best of luck in your business.
