KWS Malindi Marine National Park & Reserve

KWS Malindi Marine National Park & Reserve KWS Malindi Marine Park and Reserve is the oldest marine protected area in Kenya. Coral diversity in the area is rich with over 140 species recorded.

The park is located about 110km north of Mombasa, the core areas are within the UN Man and Biosphere reserve. The species of fish is over 300. Common habitats include sandy beaches, rocky shores and sea grass bed.

A taste of seafood at Sardinia island with songs and dances. Everyone participated fully in the day's activities showing that disability is no barrier to adventure, ocean exploration, or connection with nature.

Notably, Kenya Wildlife Service offers free entrance for persons with disabilities, a policy that continues to make experiences like this one more accessible across Kenya's terrestrial and marine parks and reserves.

INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP

Malindi Marine National Park & Reserve, together with partners, communities, conservation groups, government agencies, private sector and volunteers, joined hands for a major coastal cleanup covering the stretch from Ocean Beach to Mayungu Beach.

Through collective action, an impressive 1,375.05 kg of waste was collected, including:
♻️ General waste – 1,027.35 kg
♻️ Plastic waste – 249.5 kg
♻️ Glass waste – 46.7 kg
♻️ Rubber waste – 51.5 kg
⚠️ Syringes – 3 pieces

The success of this cleanup demonstrates what is possible when communities and conservation partners come together to protect our beaches, ocean and marine ecosystems.

We sincerely appreciate all participating organizations, community groups, government agencies, security teams, beach and boat operators, businesses, sponsors and volunteers for their commitment and support

INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP 2026

Malindi Marine National Park & Reserve invites all stakeholders, community members, schools, businesses, conservation groups, boat operators and friends of the ocean to join us for a major beach cleanup along the Malindi coastline.

📅 Date: Saturday, 19th September 2026
⏰ Time: 8:00 AM
🚩 Flag-off: Coco Beach
📍 Cleanup stretch: Ocean Beach to Mayungu

The cleanup will be conducted in six coordinated blocks:

1️⃣ Ocean Beach to Casino

2️⃣ Casino to Jetty

3️⃣ Jetty to Fisheries

🌊 EMPOWERING KENYA’S MARINE GUIDES FOR BETTER OCEAN EXPERIENCES 🐬🐠

Five days of learning, sharing and professional development brought together 35 practicing boat operators and marine guides from Watamu, Malindi, Kisite-Mpunguti and Diani at Swahili Beach Resort, Diani.

Organized by IUCN, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), WIOMSA and other key stakeholders, the training focused on strengthening the knowledge, skills and professionalism of those who are at the frontline of Kenya’s marine tourism experience.

The guides explored key areas including:

🗣️ Storytelling & Interpretation – turning facts about the ocean into engaging stories that connect visitors with marine ecosystems.

🐚 Marine Flora & Fauna Identification – improving knowledge and confidence in identifying and interpreting marine species.

🚤 Professional Guiding & Visitor Experience – enhancing safety, communication, professionalism and responsible visitor engagement.

📣 Marketing & Sales – learning how to promote marine experiences ethically while creating value for visitors and local communities.

🌱 Conservation & Sustainable Tourism – strengthening the role of guides as ambassadors for marine conservation and responsible use of our ocean resources.

Beyond the classroom, the training reinforced an important message: a great marine guide does more than show visitors what is in the ocean—they help visitors understand why it matters and inspire them to protect it.

With better-trained guides, we can deliver more meaningful visitor experiences, stronger conservation messages and a more sustainable marine tourism sector along Kenya’s coast. 🌊💙

Today, KWS joined hands with Hakika Conservation Help Group and Tufanikishe Mnagoni Self Help Group to plant 2,000 Ceriops stagal mangrove seedlings at Jambiani, with 56 community participants taking part.

KWS staff also sensitized participants on the scientific and economic importance of mangroves and the vital role of community participation in conservation.

🌿 Together, we plant today for a greener and more resilient tomorrow!

Yesterday, we proudly joined hands with partners and stakeholders for our Monthly Beach Clean-Up, led and officially flagged off by the Malindi Deputy County Commissioner, Mr. Harrison Matevwa.

Organized by PWAM the KWS Malindi Marine National Park & Reserve clean-up brought together several stakeholders, including Kenya Police, Malindi Casino, Diamond, The Kasa, Equity Bank, Kesho Yetu, County Government of Kilifi, Malindi Municipal, and many other partners.

Together, we cleaned the stretch from Lawfords Beach to Buntwani Beach, collecting a significant amount of waste:

🧴 Plastic: 18 kg
🍾 Glass: 34 kg
🛞 Rubber: 10 kg
🗑 General waste:214
🗑️ Total waste collected: 276 kg

The exercise also provided an opportunity for KWS and the DCC's office to sensitize participants on the importance of keeping our environment clean, the impacts of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems, and the role we all play in preventing biodiversity loss.

🌱 A clean beach means a healthier ocean and a safer future for marine life.

Thank you to all our partners, stakeholders, volunteers and members of the public who came out to make a difference.

Yesterday, Marine FC and Forest Rangers FC faced off in a friendly match that ended in a 0–0 draw. While the score was level, the greatest achievement was successfully delivering important conservation awareness messages to the community.

During the event, Senior Sergeant Mwachanze educated participants on:
✅ The correct wildlife incident reporting procedures.
✅ The wildlife compensation process.
✅ The composition of the Compensation Committee.
✅ Categories of wildlife incidents eligible for compensation.
✅ The basic requirements for compensation claims.

The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where community members received professional guidance on their questions.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our Patron, Madam Ntindi, for her invaluable support in making this initiative a success. We also thank Marine FC, Forest Rangers FC, and all the spectators who attended and embraced the conservation message.

We look forward to extending this initiative to wildlife hotspot areas such as Sosoni, Chakama, and Marafa, together with like-minded conservationists and Honorary Wardens, with the goal of making it a regular community engagement activity.

Together, we can strengthen conservation through sports, education, and community partnerships. 🌿⚽
