Introduction
A new chapter is unfolding. We’re turning over a new page. We’re going back to our roots, harkening the time when reading was a community affair. Long before AI and social media, the world wide web was the universe around which everything evolved. The home page was the center of our world; our digital “home”.
Today, that center has shifted, but not around here. (The concept of home is well grounded here-on these streets).
In East Africa, one city remains centered in its literary tradition and culture. In the past,that city has anchored our world through times of social upheaval as well as in times of national glory. Through many trials and tribulations as a country, Nairobi, ‘The Green City in the Sun’ , has always risen to the occassion, and remains steadfast as our anchor.
This giveaway is our way of paying homage to a city that many of us call home or have called home at one point in our lives. Let’s go back to a time when as part of our civic duty, we embraced reading as a community endeavor knowing full well its importance in nation-building. Nairobi, the nation’s capital, in one shape or form has long been embedded in this tradition. And the reading tradition that’s been nurtured over many years through the public library system and storied bookstores’ initiatives is cherished, still.
