One of the main targets of Harm Reduction Academy is to impact the development and implementation of harm reduction programs in countries of HRA students. The course provides critical tools, skills and networks to lead effective, efficient and productive projects and interventions in harm reduction. After the first module participants identified the projects they would like to pilot/introduce in their country after the completion of the course. In several next posts we will be sharing the themes and developments of students of current Cycle 7.

Shillah Mwavua from Kenya is working on integrating mental health into harm reduction programming focusing on interpersonal therapy and motivational interviewing. Kenya harm reduction program is currently well established with scaled needle syringe program and OST. At current stage it is looking into developing comprehensive harm reduction package to include mental health support. Shillah has formulated the need to train social workers in community, drop in centers and methadone sites to provide basic mental health advise and help identify the cases that need professional treatment – for referral to professional psychologists and psychotherapists. Mr Andrew Tatarsky kindly looked into Shillah’s suggested approach and gave advise on its further development. The plan is to train service providers working with PWID in The Global Fund program on mental health advise. The task that Shillah is working upon now is negotiating training with Kenya Red Cross Society and proceeding with the training delivery.

What is Mental health? When you hear the term mental health what comes to your mind?

14/02/2017

Dear Mr President....
I am writing this with a very heavy heart..I am a mother ,a wife and a health care worker . I elected you and your deputy not because you belong to my tribe ,not because the number of ugali plates in my house would increase but because I chose to believe in your manifesto and I wanted to see change , the change that you promised you will deliver especially in the health sector. I was excited because I thought finally we had gotten a president who cared for mothers and children ,a president who was committed to see an end to maternal and infant mortality by the call to free maternity services and constant provision of essential supplies to our maternities, a president who was committed to seeing children grow up healthy ,adolescents access quality health care, the elderly equally being taken care of, a president who was going to ensure all health facilities are equipped by functional and modern equipment ,medicines, gloves, beds, linen, well staffed trained personnel to improve our service delivery to the common mwanainchi who needs it, the mwanainchi who voted you in, the same one who had been dying for the last 72days just because you and your deputy have chosen to ignore him.
Mr president every single day I have woken up very early and come to my family very late I have done that because I chose to save life at any cost. Many times I have seen a child ,a mother ,a father and a grand parent lose life because I lacked the basic drug, equipment ,or ambulance to save that life it PAINS a lot and pains even more when I have to tell the orphaned child mummy has died because I couldn't save her life but deep down I know this life would have been saved if you Mr president chose to.
Today is a dark day for the health sector in Kenya ...watching our brothers ,sisters, children ,parents and grand parents die not because they deserve to but because your Government has made a choice to kill them.
Mr president the health sector in this country is not RUN by doctors ,or nurses alone. ,it is RUN by a team of health care workers , trained in various fields and with different levels of experiences. we all need each other to keep the citizen healthy so that they can vote for you .
It is a pity that the CBA has been reduced to doctors salary ...Mr president I ask you kindly time your time to read the CBA holistically then you will appreciate what I am saying .
I am asking you FOR once...don't listen to Mailu,Muraguri, the media, the opposition and even yourself ,take a few minutes and just read the CBA ....then answer me this question ...is it justifiable to jail the mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters as it was done yesterday because they are fighting for a better health care for the poor mwanainchi who can't express the suffering they are being subjected to?
Think of that voter who needs dialysis to survive and the machine is not working ...
Think of that child who is going to die because there is no chemotherapy drugs...
That pregnant mother who is dying because she developed birth complication and there was no ambulance for her..
That grand parent who is going to die because they couldn't afford basic medicines...
The list is endless and that is what the CBA is all about not the "doctors salaries."
Mr president I can't write anymore .....

All I am asking think objectively about the CBA, think about the facts highlighted in the CBA,think about the downtrodden mwanainchi, think about the legacy you want to leave behind. .. .... go out and establish this facts and be the leader you are supposed to be and end all this because the solution lies with you .

Give me a reason to continue saving lives, a reason to vote for you again.

stand in solidarity with the doctors ,health care comes first.
God bless Kenya
Yours sincerely
Shillah.
