It is important to note that the number of such incidents on international flights is actually quite low — the only difference is that most airlines do not publicize them, as it is not their direct responsibility. Death is a natural part of life, and what varies is the nature and cause. Many travelers board flights with pre-existing health conditions, and airlines often take precautions by denying travel to individuals who are intoxicated or medically unfit. Ironically, these same individuals are quick to take to social media, accusing airlines of mistreatment.
I have personally flown with Kenya Airways internationally for over 15 years and have never encountered a fatality onboard. This was clearly an unfortunate and isolated incident. To suggest that is somehow responsible for escorting passengers to their graves is not only unfair — it is grossly misleading.
Let us not forget that Kenya Airways is our national carrier, a symbol of our identity and pride. Why are we so quick to tarnish its name over matters beyond its control? People lose their lives in hospitals every single day — yet we don’t see such sensational headlines.
Kenyan bloggers and digital media practitioners must begin to discern between responsible journalism and content that is damaging and irresponsible. We must protect and build our national brands, not tear them down.I know that some of you have never stepped inside a plane.
