🔧 Why Diesel Mixes With Engine Oil

Diesel fuel mixing with engine oil is a serious engine problem that reduces lubrication quality and can lead to severe internal damage if ignored. This occurs when diesel fuel leaks into the crankcase and contaminates the engine oil.

One of the most common causes is faulty or leaking fuel injectors. If injectors continue spraying fuel after combustion, excess diesel can pass the piston rings and enter the oil sump. Worn piston rings or cylinder walls can worsen this condition by reducing sealing efficiency, allowing unburned fuel to leak into the crankcase.

Another major cause is damaged injector seals, especially in modern diesel engines. Failed seals can allow diesel fuel to leak directly into the engine oil system. In vehicles equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), repeated or incomplete regeneration cycles may also introduce excess fuel into the oil.

In some engines, a high-pressure fuel pump seal failure can cause direct fuel leakage into the lubrication system.

⚠️ Warning Signs

Rising engine oil level

Thin or watery oil

Strong diesel smell from oil

White or black exhaust smoke

Diesel-contaminated oil loses its ability to properly lubricate engine components, increasing wear on bearings, pistons, turbochargers, and camshafts.

⚙️ Immediate diagnosis and oil replacement are essential to protect the engine.

🔩 CRANKSHAFT OIL DRILLING: The Complete Technical Guide

What Is Crankshaft Oil Drilling?

Crankshaft oil drilling refers to the precision-machined internal passages bored through a crankshaft to deliver pressurized engine oil from the main bearing journals to the connecting rod (con-rod) bearing journals. These drillings are the lifeline of the bottom end of any reciprocating internal combustion engine. Without them, hydrodynamic lubrication at the rod bearings would be impossible, and catastrophic bearing failure would follow within seconds of engine startup.

The crankshaft sits at the heart of the engine, converting the linear motion of pistons into rotational torque. As it spins, sometimes exceeding 8,000 RPM in performance engines, every bearing surface must be continuously bathed in a pressurized oil film. The oil drilling network is what makes this possible under extreme mechanical loads.

🔧 How the Oil Reaches the Crankshaft

➤ Oil is drawn from the sump by the oil pump
➤ It passes through the oil filter and pressure relief valve
➤ Pressurized oil enters the main oil gallery, a longitudinal passage in the engine block
