UNDERSTANDING LABELS IN MITUMBA BALES
What is a bale label, what does it mean, and does it matter when buying a bale?
If you are in the mitumba business, you have probably seen different labels on bales. Some say Canada, UK, Eagle, Tembo, Lion, Jumbo,Premium etc..
But do you really understand what these labels mean?
Today, let's talk about bale labels and why you need to understand them.
1. WHAT IS A LABEL?
A bale label is the information, marking, tag, or printed description attached to or printed on a bale of second-hand clothes.
It is used to identify and describe the contents of the bale, its category, and sometimes its source and quality
Think of it as the identity card of a bale.
For example, a bale may have a label indicating:
• The type of clothes inside.
• The country of origin
• The quality or grade.
• The weight or size of the bale.
• The name of a supplier, brand, or packing company.
However, not every bale label contains all this information. Different suppliers and packing companies use different labels.
2. WHAT DOES A BALE LABEL REPRESENT?
A label is supposed to give you an idea of what you are buying.
It helps identify the product and gives you a starting point when making a purchasing decision.
For example:
A label may indicate that the bale contains baby or children's clothes
🇨🇦 CANADA LABEL
This indicate that the bale originate from Canada
🇬🇧 UK LABEL
This indicate that the bale is originating from UK
⭐ GRADE 1 / PREMIUM LABEL
This is a quality classification used by some suppliers to describe their bales
But remember: the exact meaning of Grade 1 or Premium depends on the supplier's grading system.
A label is a description.
3. WHAT IS WRITTEN ON A BALE LABEL?
Depending on the supplier, a bale label may contain some of the following:
🏷️ A. CATEGORY
This tells you what type of clothes the bale is supposed to contain.
Examples:
• Baby Light
• Children mix.
• Mix dresses.
• Men shirts.
• Jeans.
• Hoodies.
• Jackets.
• T-shirts.
• Bedsheets. Etc
The category is important because it helps you know what your buying.
🏷️ QUALITY OR GRADE
Some labels include descriptions such as:
• Grade 1.
• Premium.
• Cream.
• #1
• #2
These terms are used in different ways across the mitumba industry.
Important: Do not assume that all suppliers use the same grading standards.
One supplier's Grade 1 may not be identical to another supplier's Grade 1.
Always ask what the label means according to that particular supplier.
🏷️ COUNTRY OF ORIGIN
Some labels mention a country, such as Canada, UK, or another source.
However, the country name alone does not tell you the complete quality of the bale.
A bale from a particular country can contain different levels of quality depending on the packing, sorting, category, and supplier
🏷️ WEIGHT OR BALE SIZE
Some labels may indicate the weight of the bale.
For example, you may hear about 45kg, 55kg, 100kg, or other bale sizes.
But remember:
A heavier bale is not automatically a better bale.
🏷️ THE. PACKER OR SUPPLIER INFORMATION
Some labels may include a company name, packing company, or other identification.eg Eagle, Tembo,Lion,Jumbo etc
However, not every label contains complete supplier information.
4. DOES THE LABEL MATTER WHEN BUYING A BALE?
YES! The label matters.
But it should not be the only thing you consider.
A label is useful because it helps you understand what you are purchasing.
However, the label should work together with other important factors.
