Kenya chose the American way....

My name is Sarah Lekorere, and I am MP for Laikipia North.

Like many other Kenyan women, I’ve always lived in a society where the rights of the girl child have never been assured by anybody. Since a very tender age, I’ve been used to fighting for my space. I went to school, and to university, not because anybody wanted me to, but because I just had to. I had to. It’s what inspired me to become a politician. I realised that things don’t just change themselves – somebody has to change them.

And that’s how somehow, I found the courage to believe I could convince the electorate to vote for me, even though everyone said it was like pumping water uphill. But I was determined I could win – especially when I thought about who I would be losing to. I couldn’t let that happen – the lies, the mayhem, the chaos – it gave me extra energy to keep going.

Sometimes it seems that what is expected of me is unrealistic – many of the people I serve are expecting miracles. So many of the challenges I face are issues I have inherited from my predecessor - which have never been addressed. But I do truly believe, deep down inside of me, that I can make a difference.

When I meet with young people, I see what they need, and how receptive they are to new ideas. Even some of the older members of the pastoralist communities I represent. For so long, they have been marginalised, they have never played a part in any discussions about their own development. It’s exciting, and encouraging. But it’s going to take a lot of work, and greater accountability from all levels of government. I’m willing to go the extra mile though, even if it makes me unpopular with some people. My greatest achievement so far, I think, is getting people talking. No more violence – but dialogue – between communities, land-owners, stakeholders and authorities. That is how we will rebuild Laikipia.

I believe my purpose is to serve people – to reach as many as possible, and find a way to assist them. Sometimes it makes me happy for the whole year, just seeing one person smile because I have been able to serve him or her. So that’s why I keep going, because even though striving for your goals has got so many challenges, the challenges are not meant to break you. In fact, some of these challenges are meant to make you.

The gas prices are going down in favour of the consumer. Today prices are kshs 2000/ and kshs 1000/ for 13kgs and 6kgs respectively.

How long can a chicken live without its head?

About two years.
On 10 September 1945, a plump young cockerel in Fruita, Colorado, had his head chopped off and lived. Incredibly, the axe had missed the jugular vein and left enough of the brain stem attached to the neck for him to survive , even thrive.
Mike, as he was known , became a national celebrity , touring the country and featuring in Time and Life magazines, His owner , Lloyd Olsen, charged twenty-five cents for a chance to meet *Mike the Headless Wonder Chicken* in sideshows across the U.S.A.Mike would appear complete with a dried chicken*s head purporting to be his own- in fact , Olsen's* cat had made off with the original. At the height of his fame, mike was making $4,500 a month, and was valued at $ 10,000. His success resulted in a wave of copycat chicken beheadings, though none of the unfortunate victims lived for more than a day or two.
Mike was fed and watered using an eyedropper. In the two years after he lost his head , he put on nearly six pounds and spent his time happily preening and *pecking* for food with his neck. One person who knew Mike well commented: * He was big fat chicken who didn't know he didn't have a head.*
Tragedy struck one night in a motel room in Phoenix, Arizona. Mike started to choke and Lloyd Olsen, to his horror, realized he*d left the eyedropper at the previous day*s show. Unable to clear his airways, Mike choked to death.
Mike remains a cult figure in Colorado and, every May since 1999, Fruita has marked his passing with a *Mike the Headless Chicken * day..
