***Improving on writing

"The Elements of Style" by William Strunk Jr. is a timeless guide to writing that has influenced generations of writers since its first publication in 1918. This concise yet comprehensive book is revered for its clear and practical advice on how to improve writing style and clarity.

Strunk's emphasis on brevity, clarity, and the importance of choosing the right words resonates throughout the book. He provides rules of usage, principles of composition, commonly misused words and expressions, and much more, all delivered in a straightforward and accessible manner.

What sets "The Elements of Style" apart is its ability to distill complex writing principles into simple, memorable guidelines. The book doesn't just tell you what to do; it explains why certain rules and techniques are effective, making it an invaluable resource for both novice writers and seasoned professionals.

While some aspects of language usage and style have evolved since its original publication, the core principles of clarity and conciseness remain as relevant as ever. The collaboration with E.B. White in later editions adds a contemporary touch without diluting Strunk's original message.

In conclusion, "The Elements of Style" is essential reading for anyone serious about improving their writing. It's not just a guidebook but a foundational text that continues to shape modern communication by promoting precision and eloquence in writing.

***Best Novel picked.

5 critical lessons from Normal People by Sally Rooney's.

Communication is Key: The novel underscores the importance of open and honest communication in relationships. Misunderstandings arise primarily due to assumptions and unspoken feelings, highlighting the need for clear dialogue to foster understanding and connection.

Vulnerability Strengthens Bonds: Marianne and Connell's relationship evolves as they gradually lower their emotional barriers and allow themselves to be vulnerable with each other. This vulnerability deepens their connection and enhances their understanding of one another.

Power Dynamics in Relationships: The novel explores power dynamics in relationships, particularly how societal status and personal insecurities can influence interactions between partners. Marianne and Connell navigate these dynamics as they grapple with their own identities and aspirations.

Impact of Past Trauma: Both characters carry emotional scars from their pasts, which profoundly shape their attitudes towards intimacy and love. "Normal People" sensitively portrays how past experiences impact present relationships and the process of healing.

Individual Growth and Independence: Throughout the novel, Marianne and Connell undergo significant personal growth. They learn to prioritize their own happiness and well-being while navigating the complexities of their relationship. Their journey highlights the importance of self-discovery and independence in achieving fulfilling relationships.

"Normal People" is a compelling exploration of love in its various forms—romantic, platonic, and familial. Sally Rooney's evocative prose and nuanced characterizations make it a powerful read that resonates long after the final page.

***Non-fiction

David S. Wills is a writer and editor whose work mostly focuses on mid-20th-century American literature. He is the author of books about William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, and Hunter S. Thompson, as well as the editor of Beatdom literary journal and the Beat Studies Association’s journal, Beat Spotlight. He has written for Quillette, LitHub, The Millions, Mental Floss, Evergreen Review, Mekong Review, and the US Library of Congress, and has been cited in Time, the New York Times, and Harper’s.
David’s most recent book is a departure from his usual focus on the Beat Generation and related countercultural movements. It is called Murakamian Magical Realism and Psychological Trauma, and it explores the Japanese author’s magical-realist-like literary techniques as they are used to depict various forms of trauma, arguing that Murakami’s trademark style is a literary genre unto itself and one uniquely formulated to emulate post-traumatic dissociation.
