PEELED ROASTED BARLEY, ROASTED BARLEY, BLACKPRINTZ. What is the difference?
Seoul homebrew has a new type of malt for sale: Dingemans Peeled Roasted Barley.
Customers have many questions about these dark malts so we will try to explain very simply the differences.
1st difference: Roasted barley and peeled roasted barley are not malted barley. Blackprintz is malted barley.
2nd difference: Roasted barley is not dehusked before roasting. Peeled roasted barley and Blackprintz have their husks removed BEFORE roasting.
3rd difference: they have different darkness colors.
Roasted barley ~350°L color
Peeled Roasted Barley ~ 420°L color
Blackprintz ~ 500°L color
So what are the impacts of these 3 malts in beer?
• They will impact differently in the darkness of the beer
• NON malted barley (roasted barley & peeled roasted barley) will change the foam color but malted barley (blackprintz) will not change the foam color
•roasted barley gives the beer an astringent flavor because roasted husks contain a small amount of tannins that will end up in the beer. Peeled Roasted barley and Blackprintz are dehusked (husks are removed prior to roasting) so there is no astringent flavor.
•Roasted barley and peeled Roasted barley are not malted, so they impart a mild roasted coffee beans flavor to the beer. Blackprintz is malted so it contributes more to dark chocolate and toffee roasted flavor.
We hope that we can give you a better picture on the flavor profile of these 3 malts so you can carefully choose them in the future and eventually mix them together in order to achieve the best combination for your beer!
