🎂 Why do Koreans eat seaweed soup on their birthdays?

In many countries, birthdays begin with cake.

In Korea, they begin with a warm bowl of Miyeokguk (seaweed soup).

This tradition has been passed down for generations.

After childbirth, Korean mothers traditionally eat seaweed soup because it’s rich in nutrients like iodine, calcium, and iron, helping them recover 🔬👩🏽‍🔬

So every birthday, we eat Miyeokguk to remember the day we were born—and to honor the person who gave us life.

It’s more than just soup 🥣

It’s gratitude 🙏

It’s love 🫶🏻

It’s a quiet reminder that every birthday belongs not only to us, but also to our mothers 🤰🏻

That’s why millions of Koreans still begin their birthday with a bowl of seaweed soup 💞

💚 Happy Birthday.
And don’t forget your Miyeokguk 😘

🌊 Meet the Sea Palm Kelp 🌴

It may look like a miniature palm tree, but this is actually a species of kelp.

Sea Palm (Postelsia palmaeformis) is one of the world’s most extraordinary brown seaweeds. It grows only along the wave-battered rocky shores of the Pacific coast, from central California to Alaska.

Unlike most kelps that remain submerged, Sea Palm thrives in the intertidal zone, enduring powerful waves twice every day. Its flexible blades bend with the surf instead of resisting it—a remarkable example of nature’s engineering.

Although edible when young, Sea Palm is relatively rare and is carefully harvested to protect wild populations.

🌿 Fun Facts
• One of the only kelps that resembles a palm tree
• Lives in one of the harshest coastal environments on Earth
• Native to the Pacific coast of North America
• Scientific name: Postelsia palmaeformis

Sometimes the strongest life isn’t the one that resists the waves—it’s the one that learns to move with them 👩🏽‍🔬

🌿 The Silent Crisis Beneath the Waves

This Science cover highlights an urgent story:

Kelp forests are disappearing 😭

Sugar Kelp (Saccharina latissima) creates underwater forests that provide shelter for marine life, absorb carbon, and help keep our oceans healthy.

But as ocean temperatures rise,
these forests are struggling to recover.

New research suggests that turf algae can release natural chemicals that prevent young kelp from growing, making it even harder for kelp forests to return.

Protecting kelp means protecting biodiversity, coastal ecosystems, and the future of our oceans.

🌊 Every kelp forest matters.

🌿 SUGAR KELP
The Sweet Giant of the Sea

Did you know kelp can be naturally sweet?

Sugar Kelp (Saccharina latissima) is a large brown seaweed found in cold waters of the North Atlantic and North Pacific.

✨ Why is it called “Sugar” Kelp?

During cold seasons, it naturally stores mannitol — a type of natural sugar alcohol — giving it a slightly sweet taste.

💚 Rich in:
• Fiber
• Vitamins
• Minerals

🌊 More than just food

Sugar kelp provides habitat for marine life, absorbs carbon from the ocean, and is becoming an important crop for sustainable aquaculture.

From sea forests to dinner plates, Sugar Kelp is one of the ocean’s most fascinating seaweeds.

🔬 Scientific Name
Saccharina latissima
