🔬 ko-ma Mai Yanagihara
In front of a flame reaching over 1,200°C, glass briefly becomes a living material.
Mai Yanagihara’s works are created using the lampworking technique. Lampworking is a glassmaking process in which slender glass rods are melted over a flame exceeding 1,200°C and carefully shaped by hand. Rather than forming a work from a single mass of glass, the artist creates countless tiny individual elements and assembles them one by one into a complete composition.
The delicate forms that appear throughout Mai’s works, resembling spores, seeds, and slender stems, are each made individually. Every tiny sphere, every thin disc, and every fragile stem is shaped separately in the flame before being joined together. Dozens of these individually crafted elements are then connected to form a single work.
Glass becomes its softest the moment it meets the flame, yet even the slightest change in temperature can cause it to collapse or crack. Throughout the process, the artist continuously adjusts the size of the flame and the movement of the glass, relying on precise control and the sensitivity of her hands to maintain a delicate balance that exists only for a fleeting moment.
From a distance, the work appears as a single sculptural form. Up close, however, it reveals itself as a small ecosystem, built through countless repeated gestures and an extraordinary accumulation of time.
