Sometimes, eyewear factories in Guangzhou send me their catalogs.
Inside are designs that people around the world spent weeks, sometimes months, creating.
“Send us your logo.”
“We can make samples.”
“Production is very cheap.”
Among those frames, I often find familiar faces.
Sometimes, I find Labor.
They send those emails without even realizing it.
But they can never be the same.
Eyewear sits on a human face.
A difference of 1mm can change everything.
The distance in materiality is the distance between the sky and the earth.

The strength and flexibility of The Machinist are not in those files.
Labor is built through long nights without meals, together with craftsmen from Sabae, Daegu, and Shenzhen—people who have spent decades refining their hands.
Keep trying.
Swallow your pride once.
Steady your spirit.
Try again.
Then perhaps, one day, we will meet.

가끔 중국의 공장에서 레이버의 로고 파일을 보내면 샘플을 만들어 보내주겠다고 영업 이메일을 보낸다 . 레이버에 어울릴 만한 디자인이 많다면서 카탈로그를 보낸다. 친절하게. 성실하게.

그 안에는 수많은 디자이너들이 몇 개월을 애써 만든 익숙한 창작물도 보이고, 레이버의 프레임도 보이곤 한다. 그것조차 모르고 나에게 이메일을 보낸다.
안경은 1mm 차이로 사람의 인상을 바꾸고, 물성과 기능성은 하늘과 땅처럼 큰 차이를 만들어
머시니스트의 강성과 탄성은 그들의 카탈로그 안에 담겨 있지 않아요.
레이버는 사바에, 대구, 선전에서 수십 년 동안 지문이 닳아 없어진 장인들과 끼니를 거르는 밤을 지나며 만들어졌어요.
그래, 고마워. 계속해.
침 한 번 꿀꺽 삼키고,
다시 마음을 다잡고,
포기하지 말고
계속 시도해.

그러면 언젠가 우리는 만나게 될 것이야. :)
