EtherChannel is a Cisco technology that combines multiple physical network links into one logical link.

Why use EtherChannel?

=> More bandwidth
2 × 1 Gbps links → up to 2 Gbps aggregate

=> capacity

4 × 1 Gbps → up to 4 Gbps aggregate capacity

=> Redundancy

If one physical link fails, the other links continue working.

=> STP benefits

Spanning Tree sees the bundled links as one logical link, avoiding STP blocking individual links.

=> Load balancing

Traffic can be distributed across the physical links based on hashing algorithms.

LACP modes
Mode Meaning
active Actively sends LACP packets
passive Waits for LACP packets
Use active-active or active-passive. Do not use passive-passive because the EtherChannel will not form.
