🚨 NIPAH VIRUS ALERT – INDIA (2026)
⚠️ Important Awareness for Seafarers & Maritime Community
📍 Current Situation
Health authorities have confirmed an outbreak of Nipah virus in India, with cases reported in West Bengal (near Kolkata). The outbreak is currently localized, but due to the virus’ high fatality rate, international health monitoring has been intensified .
Several countries have already strengthened airport health screening for travelers coming from India as a precautionary measure .
🦠 What is Nipah Virus?
A zoonotic virus (animal-to-human)
Natural host: fruit bats
Can spread human-to-human through close contact
Causes severe respiratory illness and encephalitis (brain infection)
Fatality rate: approximately 40–75%
No specific cure or vaccine at present
🤒 Common Symptoms
⚠️ Symptoms usually appear 5–14 days after exposure
High fever
Severe headache
Vomiting
Cough or difficulty breathing
Drowsiness, confusion
Seizures / loss of consciousness (severe cases)
👉 Immediate medical attention is critical if symptoms appear.

🚢 Why Seafarers Should Be Alert
Frequent international travel
Close-quarters living onboard
Crew changes via airports and ports
Possible exposure during shore leave
🛑 Prevention & Safety Measures Onboard
✅ Practice strict personal hygiene
✅ Wash hands regularly with soap or sanitizer
✅ Avoid close contact with anyone showing flu-like symptoms
✅ Do NOT share eating utensils, towels, or personal items
✅ Report immediately to the ship’s officer or medical officer if unwell
✈️ During Crew Change / Shore Leave
Avoid consuming raw fruits unless properly washed/peeled
Avoid contact with bats or sick animals
Follow port health authority instructions
Comply with airport or port health screening procedures
🚨 If a Crew Member Shows Symptoms

Isolate the crew member immediately
Use PPE (mask, gloves)

Port Health Authority
Arrange medical evacuation if advised

Nipah virus is NOT airborne like COVID-19, but spreads through close contact with bodily fluids. Early reporting can save lives and prevent onboard outbreaks.
