From trash to treasure: The Nigerians recycling waste into wealth
As the world struggles to manage its waste, residents of Ibadan present alternative ways to recycle. If you peer into the gutters of any big Nigerian city, a filthy sight awaits you: Floating cans, nylon water sachets, empty bottles and other waste materials discarded by humans, swept there by rain, gathering and clogging up the drain.

This is not only a Nigerian problem, it is a global challenge. The world continues to writhe under the burden of waste management. In 2019, the Global Material Footprint (the amount of raw material including fossil fuels, biomass and metal and non-metal ore, extracted to meet total consumption demand), according to the United Nations, was 85.9 billion tonnes – up from 73.2 billion tonnes 10 years before. Meanwhile, the world’s electronics waste – namely discarded smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices – grew by 38 percent in that same year.

CALGARY -- Calgarians who want to put more bags of garbage out than will fit in their black cart will have to buy tags beginning Oct. 1.

Tags will cost $3 each and will be available starting this month at Calgary Co-op and Circle K locations, or they can be bought online in bundles of five. Tags are also available at city hall, however only cash or debit is accepted as payment.

Bags should be tied closed with a tag attached to the knot, then placed about half a metre to the side of the black cart to allow for collection.

3-year-old surprised by garbage truck birthday parade during coronavirus lockdown

Many a milestone has been missed thanks to the novel coronavirus pandemic, but one little girl got the birthday surprise of her life.

Lena Riley of Henderson, Nev., loves her local sanitation workers from Republic Services. So much so that it became a tradition for Lena and her mom, Leslie, to greet them with baked goods, Good Morning America reports.

“If she hears the truck outside and we don’t have something to feed them with, she’ll start to cry and say, ‘We have to feed the blue trucks,'” Riley said. “We’ve gotten to know them very well.”
