A bit about Our crew at Agasthya Crafts and Weaves (Pvt) Ltd
Plant leaf fiber based products:
- The plant leaf fibers used for the weaving of bags, boxes, mats, dustbins, etc. are all sourced locally by the weavers themselves.
- The materials used are water reed (Gallaha pan), Palmyra (thal), Pandanus (Watakeiya), Corypha/Talipot leaves (Thala kola), indi kola (a type of palm), coconut coir,
and rattan (weewal). These material are all biodegradable and ecofriendly thus will not pollute the environment and will ultimately join back the soil as bio fertilizer.
- “Yashodhaara” by Agasthya Water reed bag collection is created by Sunanda, Nirmala, Kusumawathi, and Yasawathi in Anuradahpura and Sawmaya and her mother in Nawagaththegama. Watakeiya, Palmyrah and Talipot products are by Anusha and Sumanadasa from Thissamaharama and Coir fibre carpets are sourced from Binesha from Hikkaduwa. Terracotta Jewelry
- The terracotta jewelry line is created locally by two very talented artisans Indralatha from Padukka and Samudika from Weliweriya. The clay for these items are also sourced locally. Hand woven bags
- Handloom bag line “Radhi” by Agasthya is a lovely combination of talented Radhika, “Agasthya” and hand-woven local cotton fabric. Patch work and embroidery cloth products
- Patch work and embroidery cloth products using cotton fabrics are created by Chandrani from Poojapiya in Kandy District. The Kandyan heritage is depicted in most her creations such as sarees, wall hangings, tote bags, cushion covers, bed sheets and table cloths. Cloth and reed sun hats
- Our sun hats are created by Padmi from Anuradhapura, where she combines cloth cut off pieces with water reed to create the beautiful sun hats
..Almost all these “Agasthya” creative crew members have been awarded “Presidents Award” for their creations. The production process happens at the comfort of their homes. So while they look after their children and while they attend to their homes, they could get involved in the production, thus ensuring a sustainable livelihood for their entire family…
