In the Silver Millennium I reached for him across a burning sky, and the sky took him. In Tokyo I have watched him fall, watched him forget me, watched the earth open under us. Every lifetime we have been given each other the way you are given a candle in a storm — briefly, beautifully, with the wind already at the door.
Now something comes again. I feel it the way you feel weather in your bones, hours before the rain.
And here is my small, stubborn thought: I want to buy strawberries with him. I want to argue about which movie, to fall asleep with my head on his shoulder on the last train, to be twenty and then thirty and then old, ordinary, still holding his hand. I want a life so long it becomes boring.
Maybe that is what I am fighting for this time. Not the world in the abstract. Just Tuesday. Just breakfast. Just him, still here in the morning.
