We're pleased to share images from the recently completed conservation and restoration of Ramiro Calì's altar painting of St Joseph and the Infant Christ, from the Parish Church of Mġarr.
Before treatment the painting was in a poor state of preservation, with a heavy layer of grime and surface dirt and losses to the canvas along the lower edge. These resulted from a general sagging of the support, which had also produced pronounced planar deformations.
Following the standard photographic documentation, the canvas underwent a perimetral lining and the deformations flattened. The paint surface was then cleaned with a blend of mild solvents followed by an aqueous solution, after which the losses along the perimeter were filled and the painting aesthetically reintegrated.
We would like to thank Kan Sean Abela , Mr Michael Pace Ross from the Archdiocese of Malta and the Parish community of Mgarr for entrusting us with this project. We extend our gratitude to Mr Ernest John Agius and Mr Charles Azzopardi who facilitated this project's sponsorship through the Bank of Valletta p.l.c..
