Two early A. G. Cousis & Co. cigarette tins, Malta — “Croix de Malte” and “Fairy Ci******es”. A. G. Cousis & Co., originally a Greek to***co company founded in 1872, began operations in Cairo in 1878 and established its Malta operation at St Ursula Street, Valletta, in 1887.

Both Croix de Malte and Fairy are documented as Cousis brands marketed in Hungary. A Hungarian advertisement, probably dating from 1913, names Croix de Malte, Prince of Wales and Fairy and states that these ci******es had been imported into Hungary for more than ten years.

The advertisement gives Andersen & Co., Budapest, Liszt Ferenc-tér 9, an address documented for Andersen’s to***co business in 1913. This suggests that Croix de Malte and Fairy were already being imported into Hungary before c.1903.

The tins are therefore provisionally dated c.1900–1913, although their exact manufacturing dates remain unconfirmed.

Joseph Bartolo & Co.

Joseph Bartolo & Co. was a Maltese-owned cigarette manufacturer established in Alexandria, Egypt, around 1880 by Joseph Bartolo. The firm specialised in handmade Egyptian ci******es using imported Turkish to***co, with production intended both for the local market and export to Europe. Bartolo ci******es were reportedly of high quality and were even patronised by H.R.H. the Duke of Connaught.

The company remained associated with the Maltese community in Alexandria for many decades and is documented as a cigarette manufacturer in the 1940s. Surviving original Bartolo packaging is considered rare.

The illustrated cylindrical container is an early Bartolo’s Ci******es presentation/retail tube, probably dating from approximately 1895–1925. Its Maltese-style emblem and connection with a Maltese to***co entrepreneur make it a particularly interesting piece for a Malta to***co collection.

Cousis Shield Football Programme, 1931

This rare Malta Football Association programme of Civilian Cup-Tie Competition was issued in 1931 for the Cousis Shield competition, one of Malta's most prestigious football tournaments of the interwar period.

Sponsored by the to***co firm A.G. Cousis & Co., it lists the complete knockout fixture schedule featuring leading Maltese clubs such as Floriana, Valletta, Sliema Wanderers, Sliema Rangers, Cottonera, and Hamrun Spartans.

The programme also contains contemporary advertising for the famous Cousis cigarette brands IRMA and DUBEC, making it an interesting combination of Maltese sporting and to***co history.

As an original publication from 1931, it represents an important piece of early Maltese football memorabilia.
