Ever wondered what perfumers' work look like?
In movies a perfumer is often surrounded by bottles, expertly blending different ingredients. Well, that's not how they work these days.
First, a perfumer, or a nose, as they're also called, gets a brief from a customer, for example, a brand. The brief is a task, brand's vision, which might look like a moodboard, as well as be represented with just one word. A perfumer is expected to translate this vision into a fragrance.
Then the nose writes a formula, which looks like a recipe, and sends it to a lab, where the magic happens. Thus, perfumers don't blend, they direct.
Acting as both creator and evaluator, the nose refines the scent until satisfaction is achieved. The final masterpiece is presented to the customer.
By the way, unused formulas don't end up in a trash, they patiently await their moment and might be used for future perfume creations.
