Every braid tells a story, and this one is the result of patience, precision, innovation, and passion for the art of Thappu making.
For this design, I carefully selected a dual-colour lacing system using deep purple and fluorescent green cords to create a unique visual contrast that immediately catches the eye. Each cord was individually measured, tensioned, and woven through the frame with meticulous attention to detail to ensure perfect alignment and balance all around the instrument.
The innovation behind this braid lies in the combination of traditional Thappu craftsmanship with a modern geometric weaving pattern. The purple lacing forms the primary structural network, providing strength and stability, while the green interwoven ring creates an additional layer of reinforcement and visual identity. Every crossing point had to be positioned precisely to maintain equal tension throughout the thappu, ensuring not only beauty but also durability and consistent performance.
Creating this braid is not simply a matter of threading ropes through holes. It requires understanding tension distribution, symmetry, aesthetics, and the behaviour of the thappu skin. A small mistake in one section can affect the entire structure, which is why every stage was completed with patience and careful adjustment.
I always believe that innovation is not about copying what already exists. It is about creating something distinctive while respecting the rich tradition of our culture. This braid reflects that philosophy—a blend of tradition, craftsmanship, and creativity.
