About the author
Mollty Longwe holds a Doctorate in Gender and Religion and a Masters Degree in Theology (African Christianity), both from the University of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. She has served as a Lecturer at the Baptist Theological Seminary of Malawi (BTSM) for fifteen years. She is now a Lecturer at the University of Livingstonia in Ekwendeni, Malawi, in the Faculty of Theology. Sie is also an external supervisor with the Department of Theology and Religious Studies of Mzuzu University. Dr Longwe is a member of the Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians. She has published a number of articles in the area of gender justice and a book on girl's education. In addition, she is a pastor's wife in the Baptist Convention of Malawi (BACOMA)

Many scholars have noted the importance of Christianity in Malawi and have written on the social, economic and political influence of the Christian faith. What is harder to find is a study of the nature of the faith, and an analysis of the inner logic of the religious consciousness which developed in Malawi as its peoples responded to the Christian message. By bringing forward a selection of key primary sources this book provides the opportunity to read the story of Malawian Christianity "from the inside." It allows some Malawian Christians to speak for themselves so that church history might be formed by listening directly and critically to voices from the past. About the author
Kenneth R. Ross is Professor of Theology and Zomba Theological College, Associate Minister of Bemvu CCAP and Series Editor of the Edinburgh Companions to Global Christianity. He has also served as General Secretary of the Church of Scotland Board for World Mission and Chair of the Scotland Malawi Partnership. He has been teaching and researching the history of Christianity in Malawi since he first arrived in Zomba in 1988.

When a thousand leading members of the Nyasaland African Congress were detained under the emergency regulations imposed by the Federation government in 1959, the Presbyterian chaplains who ministered to them at Kanchedza Camp in Limbe were the late Rev Jonathan Sangaya and Rev Andrew C. Ross. They soon discovered that around 700 of the thousand men were members of the Church of Central African Presbyterian. This raised a question in the mind of the recently arrived Scottish missionary: how may we account historically for the fact that so many national leaders were Presbyterians? The quest to answer that question led him to produce the thorough examination of the foundation and early history of the Blantyre Mission of the Church of Scotland which is found in this book. Written in the mid-1960s, it remains today an indispensable work of reference for understanding the history of both church and nation in Malawi.

About the author:
Andrews C. Ross served with the Blantyre Synod of the CCAP in Malawi from 1958 until 1965 when he was deported from the country owing to his close association with the "rebel" ministers Masauko Chipembere and Yatuta Chisiza. On returning from Edinburgh he completed his Ph.D. and began his distinguished career as Lecturer in the History of Missions in the Faculty of Divinity. From 1978 to 1984 Dr Ross served as Principal of New College and Dean of the Faculty of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh.

Countries worldwide are engaged in education reforms in trying to respond to certain issues ranging from socioeconomic to political and technological changes. Many countries around the world thus engage in various education reforms to deal with such challenges. Current curricular thoughts contend that the previous education did not prepare the learners with adequate knowledge and skills to deal with the everyday challenges and to enhance lifelong learning. In order to address the shortfalls of the previous curriculum, there has been a paradigm shift in the way education systems operate. Worldwide, countries are embracing the learner centred approach to the teaching and learning process as opposed to the traditional teacher centred approach. Another popular reform is Outcome Based Education (OBE). Malawi embraced OBE in its education system beginning with primary school followed by secondary school in 2001 and 2015 respectively. This book highlights early experiences of primary school teachers in the implementation of OBE. It brings to light the challenges and opportunities associated with the reform in the early stages of implementation.

Born in October 1979, Wezzie Chiziwa attended his primary school at St Augustine in Mzuzu. Later he was selected to Katoto Secondary School in 1994. He did his Bachelor of Arts Education at Mzuzu University which he obtained in the year 2003. He taught in secondary school for nine years before joining the University of Livingstonia in 2013 after finishing his MEd (Curriculum and Teaching Studies) with Chancellor College of the University of Malawi in 2012. He developed the passion for writing particularly poems during his secondary school days. In 2002, he internationally published a poem title "No Easy Life" which chronicles the debt burden of greedy leaders in developing countries. This is his first monograph t be published based on his Master's thesis. He currently a PhD student with Chancellor College.

Although research shows that a great percentage of the Malawian population is quite knowledgeable about HIV/Aids transmission and prevention, the epidemic still continues to kill at a fast rate, and the government and other stakeholders including the faith communities are continuously meeting the challenges of HIV/Aids. Many women in Malawi have died, infected and affected by the HIV pandemic because of, among other factors, a negative approach to their own sexuality. Culture, economy, ethics and values do influence a woman's sexual health, consequently affecting the whole family.
In the mid 19th century when Christianity was introduced into Malawi, the missionaries took great concern at improving people's health. One such mission was the Universities Mission to Central Africa as a pioneer of the Anglican Church in Malawi. Since then to the present, the Church has worked as a team with the government in the provision of medical services in Malawi and in its fight against HIV/Aids This book therefore looks at how adequately the Anglican Church in the Upper Shire Diocese responds to the issue of women's sexual reproductive health in the context of HIV/Aids. Improving the status of women is not only a matter of theology but of ethics, health and survival. This challenges churches to change some of their attitudes and visions and to undertake new and creative initiatives in their pastoral ministry.

This study surveys the Christian doctrine of salvation in relation to the Malawian context. Following the tradition of other African theologians, particularly John Mbiti, Handwell Yotamu Hara argues that although salvation is generally associated with only the physical life in the tradition of the African churches, total salvation that involves the whole human being as understood from a reformed perspective, need not be excluded. He argues that reformed soteriology, focusing in its basic meaning on the salvation of the whole man, both his physical and spiritual aspects, is transcultural, relevant in Malawi and compatible with traditional religions. He further concludes that there are certain shortcomings in traditional theology that may be enhanced by reformed teachings.

Rev Dr Handwell Yotamu Hara was born in 1942 in Mzimba. He is a teacher by profession. He studied theology at Calvin College and Seminary (MA) in the USA in 1981 and the majored in Systematic Theology and Christian Ethics at the University of Pretoria in South Africa in 1989. He taught at Zomba Theological College under the secondment of Nkhoma Synod and is now the Principal of Josaphet Mwale College in Nkhoma.
