Whether or not live bait has a place in flyfishing is up for debate, but what's not up for debate is the incredible strength, agility, and skill of the Carnaderos. It is a craft that they take great pride and sport in.

In the first pic Iván and crew are schooling the baitfish (probably ballyhoo) together, before he will through the 10 - 12ft (~18lb) net while the boat is still in motion. It's an impressive feat to watch. Catching ballyhoo takes more than double the effort as sardines. To throw and haul this net over 100 times a day, is hard to comprehend.

We were incredibly lucky to have Iván (Cebollo) as part of the team this year. He takes the craft seriously, and is an all around upstanding person and respected member of the community.

Catching and selling sardines here is permitted and regulated. An upside is that it places value on a healthy sardine population for the local communities and ecosystem, versus the commercial fishing boats that decimate the populations with little oversight, and use the sardines in the least resourceful way possible (dried and ground up for livestock and dog food).

We refer to using live bait as one of the "tools in our toolbox", but not the only one by any means. We also walk the beach, blind and sight cast the island and reefs, throw and troll teasers... we do it all. There really is endless opportunity in a fishery as diverse as this, and we are excited to continue to hone our skills with our crew of deeply experienced and committed Captains and Carnaderos!

Our entire team went above and beyond this season, and it showed. Starting with the captains, I could not be more proud of how hard they worked, how well they worked together, and how they went the extra inch and mile, literally. It's when the fishing and/or weather is tougher, that skill and dedication really shows. And these guys' commitment and drive was apparent this season. We all owe them a huge thanks! I can't believe 2026 La Ventana season is wrapped up!! Finally taking a deep breath and starting to reflect on the last 12 weeks. A few things stand out and I'll start with our guests. We had such an incredible caliber of guests... a wide variety of age, background, careers, life experience, goals, etc. There's something unique about how fly fishing can bring such diverse groups of people together around the table and it feels like everyone is old friends. Throw in the pursuit of the roosterfish- the great equalizer- and everyone shares a bond. Time is our most valuable asset, and it is not lost on us when you choose to spend it here. Thank you to all our guests (not all pictured here) for making this season so freaking special. It was truly a blast and a joy.

Another surprise species on our Roosterfish Round-Up week... Harley was fishing solo with Capt. Ramon when he spotted this free swimming sailfish. They cruised up to it, cast, and hooked up on a sardine pattern fly. It was out of the water only for a quick photo, properly revived, and released. You never know what you're going to find when you keep your eyes open out there!
