From 1911 to 1912, Prague was home to both Albert Einstein and Franz Kafka. During this pivotal year, their lives and ideas crossed in uncanny ways as both searched for new kinds of truth.

For Einstein, Prague became a critical step toward his General Theory of Relativity, one of the greatest scientific discoveries of all time. For Kafka, it led to the writing of his first masterpiece, The Judgment. Drawing from diaries, lectures, letters, and papers, Einstein in Kafkaland reveals how art and science came together in a city entering the modern world.

Ken Krimstein is a cartoonist and author whose work appears in The New Yorker and The New York Times.

Last year marked the 40th anniversary of The Handmaid’s Tale and it still feels relevant today.

Every form of oppression in the novel was inspired by real historical events. Margaret Atwood wrote it in 1984 while living in West Berlin, surrounded by walls, surveillance and Cold War tension.
