This uncle is clever . 😄

He brought pickled squid from his village.

So, what exactly is pickled squid?

During squid season, my skipper friends will go out and catch fresh squid. The squid is then packed and stored in the freezer without being exposed to water.

Because of the way it is stored, the squid still looks almost like fresh squid. The natural pigment on its body is also still there, so it looks very attractive as bait.

This type of squid can be used as bottom-fishing bait.

A very good alternative when you don’t have live squid. 🎣

CIRCLE HOOK 🎣

There are 2 ways Adam likes to hook the bait when using a circle hook:

1️⃣ Hook it from underneath the mouth and come out through the top of the mouth.
2️⃣ Hook it through the nose, from left to right.

Some people think this method makes it difficult to hook the fish because the hook is only positioned around the bait’s head.

NO.

When a big fish takes a baitfish, it will usually attack and eat from the head first.

If using mantis shrimp, it is different. Fish will often hit the mantis shrimp first, killing it before swallowing it. For this type of bait, if possible, don’t use a circle hook.

A circle hook has its own technique.

Don’t strike immediately just because the rod tip moves or makes a small sound!

With a circle hook, you need to let the fish run and take the bait first. Once the fish moves away with the bait, the circle hook will rotate and catch in the corner of the fish’s mouth.

If you strike too early, the hook may not set properly because the front of a circle hook is curved and not designed for a hard strike like a normal hook.

One major advantage of a circle hook is that the fish is much less likely to swallow the hook deeply. The hook normally catches on the fish’s lips.

Many anglers look for very thick and strong leaders when targeting grouper.

But actually, a big leader alone is not the solution.

Grouper are fish that suck their prey into their mouths. With a normal hook, the hook can end up deep inside the grouper’s throat. The leader can then sit close to the fish’s teeth.

During a long fight, the teeth can damage or cut the leader.

That’s why Adam prefers using a circle hook.

Let the fish run first.

As the fish takes the bait and moves away, the circle hook rotates and sets in the corner of the mouth.

The hook stays outside the mouth, and the leader also stays outside the mouth.

Your chances of landing the fish are much higher. 🎣

Friends, do you want to know why people with the most knowledge about fishing are usually boat captains?

Because that is what they do every day.

We might go fishing only two or three times a year. Boat captains, on the other hand, are out at sea almost every day. So they are quicker to notice changes in how fish feed, which bait works and the latest techniques that fish are starting to get used to.

Captains who are observant and eager to learn will always look for new ways to catch fish and the latest killer baits.

In fact, they do plenty of R&D too, just like Adam.

Adam has learned a lot from his friends who work as boat captains.

Adam is also the type of person who cannot keep fishing the old way.

Drop the sinker to the bottom, reel up two metres and wait…

The fish are advanced now! 😂

Every day, they watch our techniques and bait. 🤣

So we also need to keep learning and changing our approach.

In the world of fishing, never think that you already know everything.
Fish change, conditions change and our techniques have to change too.

Today, let’s talk about personal comfort on the boat.

Imagine the boat having to travel for 10–12 hours through rough weather before reaching the fishing grounds. If the boat is large and comfortable, it’s not much of a problem.

When we were younger, no matter how rough the weather was, we would just put on our raincoats and sleep at the bow of the boat without a care. 😄

But as we get a little older, we need to think more about our own comfort. When we get enough rest, our bodies feel fresher and more energetic for fishing the next morning.

If it’s a multi-day trip, of course we need to bring extra clothes.

But once we board the boat, we usually put our bags inside the cabin to keep them dry. Now imagine the bags belonging to 10 people, along with life jackets and the crew’s equipment. Before long, the cabin becomes a mobile storage room. 😂

Adam’s advice is to discuss this with everyone in the group.

There’s no need to bring regular luggage anymore.

Bring plastic storage containers or waterproof bags that can be kept outside the cabin.

These days, there are plenty of affordable plastic containers and storage boxes available online. If possible, everyone in the group should agree to buy containers of the same model and size. That way, they can be easily stacked without taking up too much space, and the walkways on the boat will remain more comfortable.

It may seem like a small and insignificant matter, but little things like this can actually make a big difference.

When everything is organised, the space stays tidier, it’s easier to access our clothes and essentials, and most importantly, we can get enough rest.

When our bodies are well rested, there is less risk of seasickness and we have more energy for fishing.

Back in the day, if a boat could accommodate eight people, our team would only go with five or four. Those were the old days.

Nowadays, boat costs have changed considerably. So we need to be smart about organising our belongings and making the best use of the available space so that everyone stays comfortable.

A long fishing trip isn’t just about thinking about the fish. Comfort on the boat is also part of the strategy for a successful fishing trip. 🎣

This is what you guys have been waiting for… the results from our recent trip! 🎣

The main diet for the fish around Patbara is squid.

Usually, before the trip, Adam will remind the boat captain to prepare around 400 live squid.

The squid is very important when it comes to the success of this trip. But squid availability is also seasonal.

🦑 The period when squid is usually harder to find:
Around the end of July until January or February, approximately.

So, if possible, try to avoid booking your trip during the period when squid is scarce.

That period also tends to have stronger winds and rougher seas.

During Adam’s recent trip, many anglers ended up checking into their cabins instead of fishing because of the conditions. 😅

What about mantis shrimp?

We once ordered 300 mantis shrimp for a trip.

In the end, we were the ones eating the mantis shrimp! 😂

Recently, we tried something Adam had never personally used before.

Large deep-sea prawns will catch fish too, but the response was still much lower compared with squid.

So, what do you do if you’ve already booked the trip and there’s no squid?

➡️ Stop by the market and buy some fish.
➡️ Then ask the captain to take you out and sabiki for live baitfish.
➡️ Use whatever fresh bait is available.

But for me, live squid is still the best bait. 🦑🎣

That’s why it’s important to check the squid situation before booking your trip.

Adam knows how to make fish and chips with this fish—it’s really delicious. 😄

A long time ago, these fish were abundant around the FADs near Pulau Jarak.

We usually targeted them with poppers and jigs. Just cast past the FAD, then retrieve the popper across the area—they would often strike.

But once hooked, you had to control the fish carefully. Don’t let it run into or wrap around the FAD lines. If it managed to get into the FAD, it was very difficult to bring it out.

Back then, one trip could produce 10–20 fish, each weighing around 15–20 kg. There were plenty of them.

Eventually, the skippers in the area agreed to introduce a catch-and-release rule for this fish to help preserve the stock.

This last hero finally said,
“Adam, we have to make Alpha Part 2 next year. I can’t take this anymore!” 😂

Adam said, “Okay… come, I’ll help you.” 😆

The fight went on for more than 3 hours.

Everyone on the boat had to help lift and manage the fishing line to keep it from getting tangled or caught on anything.

After all that effort… we still lost in the end! 😮‍💨🔥

This was truly a fight until the very end.
