The Knapsack by Henry Merriam

In 1878, the knapsack was patented and became the stepping stone towards modern backpacks that we see today. Its design is a fusion between the two most common designs of the era: the wood frame and the soft rucksack. The point of the metal sheet design is to reduce the strain of wearing bags by keeping them away from the body. However, the design were either too stiff or too soft and both caused back and shoulder pain.

What Makes a Good Backpack?

#1 Comfortable
Comfort is by far the most important factor in choosing a backpack. If it hurts your back, you're at best not going to use it often. At worst – you could injure yourself.

#2 Durable
Heavy-duty backpacks are generally made of ultra-strong nylon material and YKK-grade zippers and straps of nylon. Nylon and polyester are the most popular pack materials. Heavier fabrics like canvas also make durable bags that you will be using for years. Even leather works, although it can drive up the price of a bag.

#3 Content Protection
Your backpack needs to be somewhat waterproof and requires padding to protect electronic or delicate equipment. Bags made from nylon and polyester are semi-waterproof.

Is it hard to find backpacks that have all the above qualities? If so, a local backpack brand such as TeSKA might be the one for you.
