Kalachakra Manik, handcrafted by Leslie needs no introduction. A constant and familiar face at Bendahari markets, Leslie is our most mature young at heart vendor.

Here he shares some of his thoughts on his hopes for Melaka, this Merdeka:

“OK, a few thoughts ... I would like to see far more conservation efforts based on historical fact and not filtered through racial and/or religious thinking. Whatever happened in the past is past and cannot be un-done (much as some parties may wish!) and everything (be it Chinese, Indian, British, Dutch, Portuguese, or even Japanese) contributes to what Melaka is today. There is so much potential here, and it is slowly (rapidly?) being destroyed in pursuit of the almighty dollar/ringgit! Melaka is so much more than just the food! Just look at Penang - the difference? - I make no comment on that!”

Merdeka day specials!! Chocolate orange cookies by Krumbz and also hand crafted wooden altar and book stands by GWoodArt. This beautiful family of two generations shares their creativity in different ways, exploring it through food, and craft.

Martin a retired chef has come back to Melaka from Singapore. Rosa his bubbly partner is the backbone to Krumbz and brings the entire family out and about to the marketplaces, we love her energy and enthusiasm!

This Merdeka Marketplace, we have a group of young ones popping up during their school break!

Watercolour wonders++ is a table shared by two beautiful families, and we are looking forward to their wonderful creations designed by the children.

We asked them what their hope is for Malaysia this Merdeka and this is their response:

“This Merdeka our hope for Malaysia is that people in Malaysia would love their neighbors and protect the vulnerable. Freedom for us does not mean the freedom to do whatever we want, but the freedom to love and serve our neighbors and those in need.”
