New releases by local promising hip hop act, HH Decontrol debut 7” four tracks on wax. The band is heavily influenced by 90’s Hip Hop groove Cypress Hill, Beastie Boys and an Indonesian group Eyefeelsix. One fu***ng dope local releases for 2022 when Hardcore kids turn Hip Hop onto fire!

Yo…the first thing that grabbed our attention was that beautiful SS Decontrol rip (cover art below)! Then we hit play and get in the face with fu***ng dope 90’s influenced hip hop and then we started diving deeper on this called HH Decontrol. And guess what this is? It’s a brand new political hip hop project out of Malaysia featuring 3 dudes out of the Malaysian hardcore scene all over the mic and the beats: DJ Killah Z, Manic E Preacher, Addy Ruff. According to Manic E Preacher, “The project started during the lockdown here in Malaysia. The project is called HH Decontrol which is heavily influenced by Cypress Hill, Beastie Boys and an Indonesian group Eyefeelsix. The three of us involved have been in the following bands: Tools of Trade, WWHIRCC, xHaydx, Speewitches, Thinlyveiledcollusion, Engage in Combat, MyHeadCorrupt and Sharon Stoned. We started this band because the current political situation here in Malaysia is at the worst ever this is what inspired us to start this project.”

Their debut album My Diary contains 13 songs which were written sequentially based on their story telling concept. The concept was illustrated by Mocca through a girl’s point of view who frequently wrote her daily experiences into a diary. The album puts Mocca into the wilderness. Thus, they opened the gate for the return of Bandung’s indie pop spurt, after the Pure Saturday era, as well as creating a new map on the landscape of the local independent music scene.

Malaysian screamowizards PIRI REIS finally return with their first LP. After a demotape and several splitreleases, the band took their time to write 10 new songs that will be rleased under the title "Ritma". What started with bands such as Utarid, Quantis and Orbit Cinta Benjamin lead to what Piri Reis is presenting on this release. A legacy of a long lost spirit that reignites with these 10 sparks of passiondriven screamohymns, that also took a lot of influences of the european and american screamoera. The melodic part of this band is such a key to their sound, always catchy, mainly driven and guided by marrow deep hiting vocals. Ritma is a growing and earcatching release of dedicated passion and a return to traditional virtues. If you wanna fall back intime when bands such as Neil Perry, Tristan Tzara or Orchid set sails to crash your stereo, there you go.

Balada Nusantara Menampilkan Sheqal is an album by Sheqal or real name Shahrin Salehuddin, released in 1990. His music career was launched by producer Manan Ngah who wanted a change from his previous pop outputs (Fran, Sudirman, Dato’ Shake, etc). Although by all means not the first to introduce the Nusantara/Pop Traditional genre, this album proven to be a go-to for current research on the subject prompted by the album title “Balada Nusantara aMenampilkan Sheqal”. This LP version ignored two tracks made available on the cassette tape and CD releases namely the minus one and instrumental version of “Cinta Nusantara”.
