1. First, assess the child’s technical ability and musical expression.
2. Choose repertoire wisely. Regardless of the competition level, if the student’s technique is adequate, try to select pieces that showcase a variety of technical skills.
3. If the technique is not yet solid, choose a safer piece and perform it at the original tempo. Aim for a clean, confident, and precise performance. Play it safely, but never make it sound dull or lifeless.
4. Develop precision in every technical aspect. Record yourself regularly. With the violin, the moment you listen to a recording, you’ll immediately know where your current standard truly is.
5. Once both technique and confidence are in place, the final step is musical expression.
Most importantly: Don’t fall into the habit of thinking that after playing a passage ten times, it should already be perfect. Instead, spend more time asking yourself and feeling how to play it correctly.
