🇯🇵Kamakura’s Great Buddha at Kotoku-in is one of the town’s most iconic sights.
It stands about 11 meters tall and is made of bronze, and it’s one of the few outdoor Buddha statues in Japan.

It was originally housed inside a large wooden hall, but the building was destroyed by a tsunami.
For various reasons, it was never rebuilt, so the statue has remained outdoors ever since.
What you see today wasn’t designed to be like this,it just ended up this way over time.

Carp streamers aren‘t just decoration.
They look soft in the wind,
but they carry a quiet meaning.

Every May 5th in Japan is Children’s Day, when koinobori are flown.
You’ll see these carp streamers along rivers, at shrines, and outside some homes, floating in the sky.

Traditionally, they feature black (father), red (now often representing the mother), and blue (child) carp, inspired by a Chinese legend in which a carp swims upstream and becomes a dragon.

Before 1948, it was Boys’ Day, shaped by samurai values of strength and courage.

The carp swims upstream, against the current. That’s why it became the symbol.

And that’s the message behind it,
a wish from parents:
“Don’t give up when life gets hard.”

A tradition that has changed over time, but kept its meaning.

From 24 April 2026, Japan airlines are tightening onboard power bank rules. You can still carry your powerbank with you, but charging devices with it during the flight is not allowed. Charging the power bank onboard is also prohibited.
