Say hello to Narayan Barb
The Narayani Barb (Pethia narayani), commonly known as the Narayan Barb or Two Spot Barb, is a peaceful, active cyprinid fish endemic to the clear, fast-flowing hill streams of the Western Ghats in India.
Growing to a maximum length of 7.8 centimetres (3.1 inches), this schooling fish is prized in the aquarium trade for its hardy nature and attractive earthy tones. However, it is frequently confused with its close relative, Pethia setnai (the Indigo or Sunset Barb).
Aquarium Care & Parameters:
Because they hail from pristine mountain streams, replicating a high-oxygen, high-flow environment is key to keeping them healthy. [1, 2]
- Water Temperature: 20°C to 26°C
- pH Range: 6.0 to 7.5.
- Tank Setup: They thrive in well-furnished aquariums with a sand or gravel substrate, smooth river stones, driftwood, and robust live plants. Subdued lighting helps bring out their best colors and reduces shyness.
Behavior & Compatibility
- Schooling Dynamics: This is a tight-shoaling, highly social species. They must be kept in groups of at least 6 to 10 individuals. Larger groups increase their confidence, reduce shyness, and prompt males to display their best colors while competing for female attention.
-Tankmates: Excellent for community tanks. Ideal tankmates include other active cyprinids, tetras, livebearers, danios, loaches, and peaceful catfish.
- Warnings: Avoid slow-moving tankmates, as these barbs are incredibly fast swimmers and can outcompete slower fish during feeding time. Additionally, avoid housing them with long-finned species, as active barbs may occasionally nip fins out of curiosity.
