Since we already opened this model, let me share a real story.

A few years ago, one of my customers bought a small-size reel — the Seaborg 300MJL.
I advised him many times that this reel is not designed for heavy bottom fishing.

But he insisted. His reason — his fishing spot is only around 60 meters deep, and he read reviews saying the reel is powerful.

After purchase, the “drama series” began.

Every 1–2 months, the reel would come back to me for servicing.

Normally, I prefer to keep everything original from the factory.
But after 3–4 repeated issues, I gave up — and decided to fix the problem permanently.

Small reels like this rely heavily on bearings to handle load.
But when constantly used for heavy pulling, the bearings tend to fail easily — especially for heavy users (this customer has his own boat).

To solve this, I replaced the frequently damaged bearing part with a bushing.

This idea actually comes from larger, high-end machines.

Result:
The reel still works as normal.
Only difference — high speed dropped slightly from 180 to around 165.

Alhamdulillah, after that modification…
It has been 4–5 years, and the customer has never returned for the same issue.

Sometimes, durability matters more than speed.

Recently, they went on a trip to the Cakerawala oil platform — one of the furthest platforms in our waters.

The catch was not very good this time due to weather conditions.

For Adam, the best time for East Coast fishing is during the “open season” (after the monsoon ends).

However, it’s quite hard to predict exactly when the monsoon will fully end. March can still be risky, but by April, conditions are usually safer.

From April to July is the best period to go fishing.

Why does Seaborg still feel smooth?

Simple.

First, you need to understand this:

A bushing is solid.
A bearing has steel balls inside.

When a reel is used for a long time, parts will start to wear, shift (offset), or become misaligned.

For models that use bushings, the reel will start to feel heavier because there is no internal support to help reduce friction.

But for models that use bearings, it will still feel smoother and lighter.
Why? Because the steel balls inside the bearing help reduce resistance and support the movement.

Easy to understand, right?

For those who are already in engineering, this is simple.
But for those who are not, Adam always tries to explain in the easiest way so everyone can understand.

Can you use a bushing?
Yes — no problem.

When you turn it without load, it will feel smooth as usual. This is because there is a tolerance gap between the shaft and the bushing.

But when you start pulling heavy load, the situation changes. The spool will be forced to one side due to pressure.

If the planetary gear is already worn, the spool will feel even heavier because the shaft’s center point has shifted.

Adam is often asked, “My reel feels heavy under load. If I send it for service, can it become as smooth as Adam’s reel?”

The answer — servicing alone will not make the reel perfect. There are many other factors that need to be considered. To truly fix it, worn parts must be replaced — and the cost is not cheap.

And this is just one point Adam is explaining.

A bigger reel doesn’t always mean the motor inside is bigger. Refer to the image below—some manufacturers design the base to fit a smaller motor even though the body looks large.

Adam was among the early ones who started sharing and showing the internal parts of reels—so friends can understand what they’re buying, how to take care of it, and also recognize the weaknesses of each machine.

Before this, many just focused on selling. Those with knowledge often chose to stay quiet. That’s not wrong—because this knowledge is their “rice bowl,” their livelihood.

It’s not easy to become skilled in this field. It takes time, experience, and effort. What each person learns belongs to them. But Adam feels proud and grateful that there are still some who are willing to share and exchange knowledge.

Adam’s view is different—the more people understand these machines, the better. That’s why Adam spends time every day writing here, so beginners have something to refer to.

What Adam shares is only the basics. Like someone at primary level helping those just starting out.

After years of writing, Adam realized it’s not easy to make everyone understand—because readers come from different backgrounds. So Adam chooses to keep things simple, without going too technical.

Higher battery voltage can make your reel more powerful and faster.

However, whether it is suitable or not depends on your reel model. Not all Miya reels can run on 14V—some are designed to use only 12V.

Miya reels are quite smart. If the voltage is not suitable, an error message will appear on the screen and the reel will automatically cut off and stop working.

The type of battery you use also affects performance. Car batteries generally provide slightly less power compared to lithium batteries.

If you want to use a lithium battery, you can refer to Adam’s older posts. There’s a guide on how to build your own battery setup.

It’s affordable too—around RM80, you can already get a complete set.

Why shouldn’t you overfill your reel with line? 🎣

Many anglers overlook this.

Braided line absorbs water when submerged.
When you retrieve, it carries that water straight into the reel.

What’s the problem?
➡️ Saltwater seeps into the reel
➡️ Bearings and internal parts start to rust

If you look closely at your reel, there’s always a gap between the spool and the body.
That’s where water can enter.

That’s why manufacturers recommend filling the line at a lower level.

Example:
Miya X5 HP — when you open the spool, you’ll see a yellow line inside.
➡️ That’s actually the recommended maximum level

It looks low… but it’s the safe level for your reel.

The issue with most anglers:
We don’t feel confident with less line 😅

But in reality:
A full Miya spool is already around 500–600 meters
One reel I opened had about 900 meters — that’s overfilled ❗

Adam’s advice:
If you want to protect your reel, don’t overfill the spool.

If you still don’t feel confident with less line, you can continue…
but understand the risk — water will still enter your reel.
