Threads of Fate Episode 1

The city of Lagos never slept, and neither did Daniel Adeyemi's ambition.
It was a Tuesday morning when he walked into the Okafor Medical Centre to deliver the architectural renderings for the new wing his firm had been commissioned to design. He wore a slim navy suit, a rolled-up blueprint under one arm, and a coffee cup in the other.
He was not expecting the woman behind the reception desk to stop his heart.
She wasn't at the reception desk, actually. She was crouched beside it, helping an elderly woman who had dropped her handbag, gathering scattered coins and pill bottles with unhurried gentleness. She wore a white coat. Her name tag read: Dr. A. Okafor.
Daniel stood there long enough to be embarrassing.
She stood, handed the old woman her bag, and turned. She caught him staring.

AMARA: (amused) Can I help you?

DANIEL: (recovering) Yes. I'm looking for the administrative office. I have the new renderings for the east wing.

AMARA: (studying him) You're the architect?

DANIEL: Daniel Adeyemi. Adeyemi Design Group.

AMARA: (a slight pause at the name) I'm Dr. Amara Okafor. This is my father's hospital.
The name hit Daniel like cold water. Chief Okafor's daughter. His father's business partner's daughter. He had heard the name a hundred times at dinner tables and boardrooms β€” but this was not what he had imagined.

DANIEL: Small world.

AMARA: (turning to lead him down the hall) Lagos always was. Come, I'll take you to the office.

They walked side by side through the clean white corridor. Daniel noticed she greeted every nurse by name. Every elderly. Even the janitor near the stairwell.

DANIEL: (quietly) Do you know everyone here?

AMARA: (smiling without turning) I grew up in this hospital. My father built it when I was six. I used to do my homework in the waiting room.

DANIEL: And now you work here.

AMARA: Cardiology. Third floor.

DANIEL: So you fix broken hearts?

She stopped walking. Turned and looked at him with something between amusement and suspicion.

AMARA: Medically speaking β€” yes.

She held his gaze one beat longer than necessary, then pushed open the office door.

That evening, Daniel sat in his apartment staring at the blueprints but seeing none of them. He picked up his phone and called his sister.

DANIEL: Lisa, you know Chief Okafor's daughter?

LISA: (on the phone) Amara? The doctor? Why?

DANIEL: I met her today.

LISA: (long pause, then a laugh) Oh no. Your voice already sounds different.

DANIEL: I'm just asking.

LISA: Daniel. I know that voice. You're in trouble.

He laughed. She was right.

What he did not know what neither of them could have known was that across the city, in a sleek corner office on the 22nd floor of Cole Tower, a man named Victor Cole was opening a folder. Inside it were photographs.
Of Richard Adeyemi. Of Chief Emeka Okafor.
And a single line written in red ink at the top of the page:
"It's time."
