AFIKPO ARTS FORUM, IN CONJUNCTION WITH AFIKPO STUDIES GROUP, ANNOUNCES THE 2026 RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP AWARD WINNERS

The Afikpo Arts Forum (AAF), in conjunction with the Afikpo Arts Studies Group (ASG), is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2026 Research Fellowship Awards.

The Fellowship was established to encourage research, documentation, and scholarly engagement with the history, arts, culture, heritage, and intellectual traditions of Ehugbo (Afikpo). It reflects the Forum's commitment to preserving indigenous knowledge while fostering new generations of researchers whose work will contribute meaningfully to cultural preservation and sustainable development.

Following a competitive selection process, the Fellowship Committee approved the following award recipients:

1. Immaculate Eleje Enya
2. Uchenna Patrick Azubuike

Both Fellows emerged through a rigorous evaluation of their research proposals, demonstrating originality, scholarly merit, and strong potential to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on Afikpo's cultural heritage.

As part of this maiden edition, the Afikpo Arts Forum, through the Fellowship, provides a combined research grant of ₦3,000,000, alongside mentorship and institutional support to facilitate the successful ex*****on of the approved research projects.

Speaking on the announcement, the organisers reaffirmed their commitment to promoting excellence in indigenous scholarship and building a vibrant community of researchers dedicated to documenting and preserving Afikpo's rich artistic and cultural legacy.

The Afikpo Arts Forum and the Afikpo Studies Group extend their sincere appreciation to everyone who responded to the Fellowship call, including applicants, reviewers, partners, and supporters whose contributions ensured the success of the inaugural programme.

The Forum congratulates the award recipients and looks forward to the valuable research outputs/deliverables that will not just enrich scholarship on Afikpo history, arts, and culture but will be presented at the 2026 Afikpo Arts Forum's 5th edition of the Afikpo Arts and Cultural Festival and published across relevant platforms.

The Afikpo Arts Forum, with the endorsement of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), is delighted to officially announce the theme and date of the Afikpo Arts & Cultural Festival 2026.

Theme: OMEZUE - Rethinking Social Progress in Afikpo Society

The theme of the 2026 Afikpo Arts and Cultural Festival, "OMEZUE: Rethinking Social Progress in Afikpo Society," draws inspiration from one of Afikpo's most revered traditional institutions—the mmemme system of title-taking, culminating in the prestigious Omezue title for both men and women.
Historically, Omezue has represented the highest standard of honour, integrity, leadership, industry, service, and commitment to the collective well-being of society.

More than a ceremonial distinction, it embodies a merit-based pathway to social recognition, rewarding individuals whose achievements, moral character, and contributions have positively shaped their communities. The Festival adopts this theme to revisit these enduring values and examine how they can continue to inspire ethical leadership, responsible citizenship, and inclusive community development in a rapidly changing world.

Rather than viewing Omezue solely as a cultural title, the 2026 Festival presents it as a framework for reimagining social progress—one that celebrates excellence in education, entrepreneurship, innovation, public service, philanthropy, and community investment while preserving Afikpo's rich cultural identity.

Through exhibitions, scholarly conversations, artistic expressions, and documentation initiatives, the Festival invites all stakeholders to reflect on how the timeless principles of Omezue can guide the building of a more united, prosperous, and culturally grounded Afikpo society for future generations.

The Afikpo Arts Forum is proud to host and commence the Afikpo Lecture Series with the Afikpo Studies Group.

Register for the first episode of the Afikpo Lecture Series, titled “The Anglo-Afikpo War and the Colonisation of Ehugbo".

In this inaugural session, Dr Oko-Otu Chukwuemeka will examine the military encounters, political negotiations, and colonial strategies that reshaped Afikpo (Ehugbo) society in the early twentieth century. The lecture will trace the origins of the conflict, its local consequences, and its place in the wider history of colonisation in Eastern Nigeria.

This lecture offers a valuable opportunity for students, scholars, and the public to engage with the historical foundations of power, resistance, and memory in Afikpo.

Young Artist Ewa Fortunate Udeamra from Afikpo Arts Forum receives full scholarship from Prof Uche Azikiwe.

The Afikpo Arts Forum is pleased to announce the award of a full academic scholarship to Miss Ewa, Fortunate Udeamara, a 14-year-old SS2 student of Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Staff Secondary School, Unwana, Afikpo.

This scholarship, generously sponsored by Professor Emeritus Uche Azikiwe , will cover Fortunate's tuition from her current secondary school level through the completion of her university education.
Ewa Fortunate emerged as one of the winners of the 2026 Afikpo Arts and Cultural Exhibition Students Art Competition, where she distinguished herself with an exceptional pencil portrait of Professor Emeritus Uche Azikiwe. In recognition of her remarkable talent and as an extension of goodwill towards nurturing young creatives, this scholarship has been awarded through the Afikpo Arts Forum.

This initiative underscores the Forum’s commitment to promoting artistic excellence, supporting emerging talents, and advancing educational opportunities within the community.

The Afikpo Arts Forum congratulates Ewa Fortunate Udeamra on this achievement and looks forward to her continued growth and impact in the arts and beyond.
