Today is International Self-Care Day!

Self-care isn't only about spa days or vacations.

It means making daily choices that protect your physical, mental, and emotional health.

This weekend, challenge yourself to:
Drink more water.
Eat one extra serving of vegetables.
Go for a 30-minute walk.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease : A Disease You May Not Know About

Can breathing become difficult even if you've never smoked?

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a long-term lung disease that makes it difficult to breathe. While smoking is a major cause, many people in Nigeria are also exposed to indoor smoke from firewood and charcoal used for cooking, as well as outdoor air pollution.

Early symptoms include:

Frequent coughing
Shortness of breath
Wheezing
Chest tightness
Producing excess mucus

Although COPD cannot be cured, it can be prevented and managed.

Protect your lungs by:
Avoiding to***co smoke.
Improving ventilation when cooking.
Wearing protective equipment in dusty environments.
Seeking medical attention if you have a persistent cough or difficulty breathing.

Healthy lungs mean a healthier life.

Self-Care Isn't Selfish, It's Preventive Healthcare

Did you know that many non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease, are strongly influenced by our daily habits?

This Self-Care Month, remember that taking care of yourself today can reduce your risk of illness tomorrow.

Simple acts of self-care include:

1. Eating balanced meals rich in fruits and vegetables

2. Being physically active for at least 30 minutes most days

3. Getting 7–9 hours of quality sleep

4. Drinking enough water

5. Managing stress in healthy ways

6. Going for regular health check-ups

Small healthy choices, repeated consistently, can make a significant difference over time.

Do not forget that your health is your greatest achievement!

Diabetes Doesn't Wait for Adulthood

Did you know that type 2 diabetes, once seen mainly in adults, is now increasingly being diagnosed in children?

At Future Wellness & Non-Communicable Disease Prevention Initiative (FWNCDPI), we believe awareness today can protect our children's tomorrow.

Over 90% of all diabetes cases worldwide are type 2, and it's appearing at younger ages than ever before (World Health Organization, Diabetes Fact Sheet, 2024). The good news? Many of the risk factors are within our control as families and communities.

Small changes at home today can prevent big health struggles tomorrow. Start with a balanced plate, active play, less screen time, and regular checkups.

Let's raise a healthier generation together.

Friday Reflection

End the week with your health in mind.
As the week comes to a close, take a moment to check in with yourself:

Have you been active?
Have you eaten healthy meals?
Have you managed your stress?
Have you had enough water and sleep?

Your daily habits shape your long-term health.

Hypertension The Silent killer

The deadliest health condition often has no symptoms.

High blood pressure often has no warning signs, but it increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.
Adults should check their blood pressure regularly, reduce salt intake, stay physically active, and avoid smoking.
