Episode 5

Her body was discovered by a group of young boys from the community who were gathering snails and somehow they maneuvered her body outside the bush.

One of the women checked her pulse and noticed signs of life. Rather than taking her to the hospital, they bègan cleaning her wounds and praying for her. Some were using traditional methods, wetting leaves in water and sprinkling them on Ginika's body, others were fórcing some strange water on her mouth in hopes that she would revive. Mr. Ade, a married man who lived nearby, heard the news. Without hesitation, he left his wife and children and promptly drove Ginika to a hospital in his car very early in the morning.

The initial hospital where they took her did not have the necessary facilities, so Ade transferred her to a general hospital for medical care. Her bloóds and urine samples were collected and tested over the course of a few months while Ginika remained in the hospital, traumatized. Reports indicated that she was significantly prègnant and also tested pósitive for HIV.

They informed ginika about the pregnancy but she said nothing other than to shed hot tears. As for the HIV, they kept it confidential at the time. They knew that breaking such terrible news to ginika would only worsen the situation. Mr. Ade, the only man who volunteered to transport ginika to the hospital, was the one who received the news directly from the health personnels.

As he conversed with nurse eucheria near the dental ward, he remarked, "This girl has made a mess of her life. I'd doubt if she's even up to 20 years old. Always crying like a baby without having any meaningful words to spill out. Na her mama I just dey pity pass."

"You can't tell me that a girl like her didn't get sufficient guidance and counseling from her mother during her formative years. It is crucial for her to take her medication regularly during this her early stage of the virus to combat it or else it will continue to deteriorate her health. Girls of nowadays are too stubbórn. What would she be doing outside by that hour? My goodness! My own daughter can't step outside without taking permission from me. That's how I've raised her."

Mr Ade, rotated his head in disappointment. He exhaled and stated "That's the problem! This is where my issues with women arise. I blame her mother for crying out loud. I blame her. This girl is supposed to be under her mother's care. Out of all the people present who witnessed the situation, not a single person could assist in taking her to the hospital. This girl is just lucky to still be alive.. Her family should make an effort to locate her, as I will not continue to do so. I am a businessman with numerous projects to oversee. I cannot continue to watch over someone for months without any communication from her family. This is exactly what my wife was trying to warn me about. "I can't! stop," she said as she stood up. As Róland raised ginika's gown, Ginika pulled it back down to her lègs. However, Roland persisted and lifted it up again, attempting to lift her onto the bed and spreád her legs.

"I will screám o, leáve me alone! Don't make me to start disrespècting you for your generosity, please."

"Open those legs. Don't make me to fórce you. Wait, the worst thing my Mother would do is to scóld me and shout at me. She won't kîll me."

"Imagine someone doing this same thing to your daughter. How would you feel? Are you not a Chris..." a sláp from Roland echoed on her right jaw before she could finish her words. "Who are you to start advising me?! Are you mád?! You will leave this hóuse. Just watch."

"Open the back door let me leave the house. If that's my fate then." Ginika spoke leaning against the wall, panting heavily in fear.

"You see yourself. Ordinary sèx wey we go just run for just 20 to 30 minutes and you're here acting like a fóólish child."

Roland dragged her towards the door.

Ginika shivered as the chills ran through her body; she was highly allergic to cold weather. The madam's gown she wore was very light. Desperately seeking shelter, she scanned her surroundings for a pláce to take refuge. Her gaze landed on a nearby road, contemplating whether to seek cover under the mango trees or any other available shield before continuing to seek for a proper place to rest.

As devîl may have it, the new road that ginika took was where cult boys usually passes at night to do to all manner of illicit agenda. There were bushes and trees by the sides of the road and you can't always see the end of the road as It's always a long walk. Numerous unsettling tales had been recounted about that particular route. Panic setting in and Ginika began to sprint upon hearing faint footsteps behind her but she unexpectedly stepped on a broken bottle and collapsed. The guys/men came in multitudes all mixed up. A a mix of young boys who appeared to be of secondary school age and older members, materialized brandishing guns. They muffled Ginika's môuth and carried her deeper into the secluded bush, away from prying eyes and they all tóok turns on her one by one till she fáinted. Even after rendering her uncónscious, they still continued regardless till they were satisfied and abandoned her bódy in the bush.

Steven entered his room and walked to the table, picked up the file, and left the room. He went downstairs and walked out of the house.He headed to the garage,hopped into his car.His gateman,Sammy opened the gate, and the car drove away.

As Steven drove to work, he thought about his girlfriend, Cynthia. He recalled what she said: "So, you mean my coming here was just a waste of time?" Steven became upset with himself and wished he had not forgotten the file. He took his phone and dialed Cynthia number but she refused answering the call.

Steven arrived at his company and parked his car in the parking lot. He got out and walked into the company. As soon as he entered the company, his employees eyes were on him.

"Welcome back sir"One of his worker said

"Thank you"Steven answered and climbed the stairs

Steven got to his office,opened the door and walked to his desk,he sat on the chair and switched on the computer and started typing on the project he hadn't completed earlier.

As he worked, his mind kept wandering back to Cynthia and their argument. He felt guilty for forgetting the file and knew he needed to make things right with her. But for now, he focused on his work, trying to push their disagreement to the back of his mind.

Suddenly the door creaked open and his friend Jude entered the office.Steven looked up and was surprised to see his friend,

"Ah Jude,you're here!"he said and stood up from his chair

They both shook hands, and Jude sat on the chair.

"How far guy?"Jude asked

"I'm fine and you?"Steven answered

"I'm good"Jude answered

"How is your girlfriend?"Jude asked

"She is fine, just that I offended her," Steven responded.

"Ah! what happened?"Jude asked

"Hmm...this morning while I was working on a project.I discovered that I had forgotten an essential file for the customer work, so I decided to rush home to get it. I was about to leave when Cynthia walked into the office, and I told her that I needed to rush home because I had forgotten a file to use for a customer project, and she immediately became annoyed."Steven stated

"She got angry even after you told her it was a file to work on a customer project?"Jude asked.

"Yeah," Steven responded.

"It surprises me that she got angry because you wanted to go home to get an important file for a project," Jude said.

" I was surprised too. She has been acting strange lately, like she is not listening to me or understanding me."Steven answered

"Maybe you should talk to her, figure out what is going on. You two are always so in sync."Jude leaned

"I feel like we are drifting apart. And it's not just this file thing..."Steven answered

"Well, you need to fix things right man. You two are meant to be together."Jude said

"Yeah I will"Steven answered

He agreed to make things right with Cynthia, no matter what it took.

"So how is your new maid?"Jude asked

"She is fine, man. That girl can cook very well, and her dishes are superb."Steven answered

"Yeah, man, I can see that she is really spoiling you with delicious meals.Just two months you employed her, you're already looking like a well-fed king!"Jude chuckled

"She is not only a great cook, but also a talented baker. I'm telling you, Jude, she is a gem"Steven said

"Wow, that's amazing! I wish I had a maid like that. My place is always a mess, and my cooking skills are limited to microwaving pizza."Jude answered

"Yeah, I'm lucky to have her. She has been a huge help to me,my house has never been dirty since I employed her. The house is always clean".Steven grinned

"You're a lucky man, Steven. Enjoy your culinary paradise while it lasts"Jude said

"Yeah"Steven answered

Jude stood up,"Alright then, I'll let you get back to work. But seriously, Steven, make things right with Cynthia."Jude said

"Yes, for sure, I will. Thanks for the advice."Steven answered

Jude left the office

As soon as Jude left the office.Steven remembered Maryann mentioning that they were out of food supplies at home. He quickly pulled out his phone and sent a transfer of 50,000 naira to her account.

He thought to himself,"That should cover the foodstuffs and a little something extra. She has been working so hard to take care of the house and cook for me, it's the least I can do."

Maryann was ironing her boss next day outfit for work.When a message popped into her phone.she switched off the iron and took her phone and went through the message

"50,000 naira! Oh my goodness!" Maryann exclaimed

She couldn't believe it. She had only mentioned the lack of food supplies and was not expecting him to send her such a large amount of money.

"He has always been a good boss to me, but this is beyond what I expected" she thought to herself.

She quickly typed a thank you message and sent it to her boss

Maryann quickly finished ironing the clothes and headed to the market.

In the kitchen

Maryann was stirring a pot of egusi soup.The aroma of the soup filled the kitchen. She added a pinch of salt and pepper,she tasted the soup to ensure it was perfect.

"Knock!Knock!"

"Who is that?"Maryann asked,she opened the back door

"Mary,Mary"Sammy giggled

Maryann laughed out loud, "Hahaha,I know you're hungry, Sammy"

"Yes I am.The aroma of the soup has filled the whole compound.The smell of that egusi soup is driving me crazy"Sammy answered

"'I am almost done cooking. I'll bring your food to you okay"Maryann said

"Okay, Thank you! I'll be waiting" He answered

Sammy turned and headed back to his quarter.

Maryann returned to her cooking, having already finished preparing soup.She heated water to prepare semovita.As the water boiled, she carefully poured in the wheat,stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. She kept stirring until the mixture thickened, transforming into a smooth semovita.She dished out Sammy food and carried it to his quarters.

Sammy was seated outside, waiting for dinner.Maryann approached and handed him his food.

"Sammy,here is your food"She said

"Thank you"He appreciated

Sammy relaxed on a plastic chair,enjoying the evening air.When he heard the distinctive sound of his boss car horn. "peep,peep,peep!"

He quickly jumped up from his seat and hurried to the gate.He opened the gate and his boss car drove into the compound.

The car parked at the garage and Steven stepped out of the car.

Sammy rushed to him and greeted"Sir, welcome"

"How are you doing, Sammy?"Steven asked

"I'm fine, sir." Sammy replied

"Alright"Steven said and walked towards the house, while Sammy walked to the opposite direction, heading to his quarter.

Steven got to the balcony and pressed the doorbell button. Maryann opened the door

"Welcome sir," she greeted.

"Thank you"he answered

"How was work sir?"She asked

"It was good. Just busy as usual." he answered

Steven stepped into the sitting room

"Something smells delicious," he said

"Sir I prepared egusi and semovita for dinner." Maryann replied

"Great.Thats my favorite soup." he said.

Without another word, he quickly climbed the stairs to his room while Maryann went to the kitchen.

Few minutes later, Steven returned downstairs to the dining room. He sat down on the chair. Just then, Maryann came out of the kitchen, holding a tray laden with steaming plates of egusi soup and semovita. She smiled as she placed the plates on the dining table in front of Steven

"Enjoy your meal, sir," she said and left

Steven ate the food and was nodding his head as it danced on his taste buds. The egusi soup was indeed delicious.After finishing his meal, he called out, "Maryann! Maryann! Maryann!"

Maryann hurried out of the kitchen"Yes sir"

"Thank you for the delicious meal." Steven appreciated

"It's nothing, sir."Maryann said

Steven walked to the sitting room, settling into the sofa chair while Maryann gathered up the plates and took them to the kitchen

Steven took his phone and dialed Cynthia number. She answered

"Hello baby, I'm sorry for what happened today." Steven said

"Steven.I'm so angry with you, I came to see you at your office and you take me as a trash." Cynthia responded

"No baby, not like that."Steven pleaded

"Then what's it like?"Cynthia asked

"Baby, I forgot an important file to work on a customer project and decided to go home to bring it, when you showed up." Steven responded

"You always do this, Steven! You always push me away when I need you most. I came to your office, and you barely had time for me. You're never available when I need you, but you're always busy with work. It feels like I'm not important to you anymore." Cynthia yelled

"Not so baby"He said

Cynthia hung up the call

"Hello baby, baby! Are you with me?" Steven asked

But there was only silence. He looked at the screen and saw that it was dead. It dawned on him that she had hung up on him.

"What!! She ended the call on me!" he exclaimed

Maryann walked to the sitting room and, as she heard her boss shout, she became scared and asked, "What's the problem, sir? What's it?"

"Oh... Maryann, it's nothing." He answered

"Are you sure sir?"Steven asked

"Yes I'm sure"

"Maryann! Maryann!Maryann!"Steven called out

Maryann who was in the kitchen washing dishes,quickly dried her hands with a towel and hurried to the sitting room.

"Good morning, sir," Maryann greeted

"What is ready for breakfast?" Steven asked.

"Bread and tea, sir," Maryann replied.

Steven smiled. "You know I love fresh bread, right?"he asked

"Yes, sir. I baked bread this morning."Maryann replied

"Great! Serve me, please," Steven said.

Maryann headed back to the kitchen.
Meanwhile, Steven walked to the dining room and sat down on the chair, waiting for his breakfast to be served.

Few minutes later,Maryann returned back to the dining room with a tray. On the tray was freshly baked bread and a jug of hot water. She placed the tray on the dining table and poured some hot water into a cup. Then, she opened the containers of milk and Milo and added them to the water. She stirred the tea.

"Here you go sir"Maryann said

"Thank you."Steven appreciated

Maryann smiled and left the dining room

After finishing his breakfast, Steven stood up and called out to Maryann.

"Maryann!!"

She came out of the kitchen quickly.

"Yes sir"Maryann answered

"I'm leaving for work now."Steven said

"Alright sir.Sir there is no food left in the house."Maryann answered

"Don't worry, I'll send you money later in the day. You can buy whatever you need."Steven said

"Okay sir"Maryann answered

Steven walked to the sitting room, picked up his car keys and briefcase from the table, and left the house.

Earlier that morning in the office Steven was typing away on a critical customer project,he suddenly realized he had left a vital file at home.

"Ah no!" he exclaimed, jumping up from his chair.

Just then Cynthia his girlfriend entered the office

"Hello, sweetheart!"Cynthia greeted

"Hi, baby,"Steven answered, as he prepared to hurry out.

"I didn't expect you coming"Steven said

"What do you mean?So I can not just pay you a surprise visit," Cynthia asked.

"Uhmm..baby not like that,I forgot a file at home, I need to rush back and get it," Steven explained.

"So, you mean my coming here was just a waste of time?" Cynthia asked

Steven, still preoccupied with his forgotten file, replied, "I forgot something important at home, I need to go get it." His response only added to Cynthia exasperation

Cynthia threw up her hands "Whatever!"

She turned and left the office. Steven, realizing his mistake, quickly followed her, seeking to clarify the situation.

"Baby, just hear me out!" he pleaded

Cynthia heels clicking on the stairs as she descended to the floor below. Steven chased after her, calling out "Baby, wait!"he begged

Cynthia ignored his pleas. The scene unfolded in front of Steven employees, who watched in surprise as their boss pursued his girlfriend

"Yack..boss, girlfriend is always stressing him out!" One of his workers exclaimed

"Yes,she is hot tempered.If she didn't yell at him, she would just give him the silent treatment," one worker chimed in.

"And, she is always drama, drama, drama," another added.
Cynthia slammed the car door shut and rolled up the window, leaving Steven standing outside, pleading with her. He gently tapped on the glass.

"But baby, I have to get that file.It's crucial for the project and..."Steven pleaded

But before he could finish talking, Cynthia started the engine and drove off, leaving him standing alone in the parking lot.

Steven watched as Cynthia car disappeared into the distance. He then turned and walked to his own car. He got in, started the engine, and pulled out of the parking lot, heading home to retrieve the forgotten file.

Steven car approached the gate, it let out a series of sharp beeps: "Peep peep peep!"

The gate man, who had been lounging in his small apartment adjacent to the gate, quickly rushed out and opened the gate, he swinged it wide to allow Steven car to pass through. With a smooth drive, the car entered the compound and drove to the garage.

Steven alighted from his car,and walked to the balcony,he opened the door and stepped into the sitting room,he was surprised to hear Maryann melodious voice,she was dusting the sofa chairs in the sitting room,and was singing

"I will be your shoulder when you cry...when all hope is gone i am there I'm your angel....."she was singing celine dion song

Steven stood by and watched as she sang

"Wow, wow, wow! Your voice is incredible, Maryann!"Steven exclaimed

Maryann stopped singing abruptly and turned around,she was startled by his sudden presence

"Ah, sir, you ar...are back?" she asked

"Yeah, I forgot a crucial file. But I'm so glad I got to hear you sing. You have a lovely voice."Steven complimented

"Thank you sir" Maryann thanked

Steven climbed the stairs and headed to his room.

"Thank you," she replied, dropped her high heels, placed both hands under the gushing tap, and began drinking..

Ginika roamed around the streets. In fact she was lost as she had no phone nor any means to communicate with her people. Ginika was not the type that was used to bêgging from strangers as she was scared of meeting intruders if not he'd have bêgged and raised some money to transport herself back to her base.

As she walked, she couldn't help but notice the stares she received from passing men, all ogling her backside. Each time one of them dared to ask for her contact information, she would dismiss them with a sharp retort and continue on her way.

She approãched a flat. Right behind the flat was a shaded area, where a woman was breaking some melons. Exhausted from walking in the scorching sun, Ginika approached the madam and questioned her if she could sit down next to her and rest under the shade, and the woman nodded in agreement.

"Madam please eh can I spend the night here?" She asked the madam after resting for a few minutes.

"That question is kind of weird my dear as I don't even know you. Look at how you're dressed in the first place. Most times, your dressing speaks highly of who you are."

"I was rõbbed ma. It's a long story. I only need where to spend the night. I school in the university. I haven't been here before I'm kind of lost."

"And so? The second to my last born is also in the school reading geology. Two of my children are married. Even me myself I went to school during my youths."

The madam looked at her from head to her toes and decided to reconsider.

She instructed her youngest son, Roland, to serve Ginika some boiled plantain with red oil for her meal. Roland, who was very tall and muscular, had been staying with his mother and assisting her for years. He was five years older than Ginika. Roland also showed her the bathroom where she could take her bath.

When it was time for bed, Madam Sisi arranged Ginika's foam and mattress on the floor next to her son's and joined them in prayer. Afterwards, Madam Sisi left for her own room and they all fell asleep.

Ginika was frightened to seeing a man in her midst. The warnings from her parents echoed in her mind like a bell. She stayed awake until almost 1:30 am before drifting off to sleep. Late at night, Ginika jolted up from the weird touches of Roland on her bãckside.

"Is everything okay?" Ginika asked, gripping with fear.

"Shhh. Lower your voice. No dey do like small pikin. I peeped on you when you were bathing through the window and I can't stop thinking about the things I saw,"

Ginika, where do you think you can just get free 80k like that? Even the cleaners working in schools, filling stations, and factories don't earn up to 20k per month. It's just a one-day task and you'll receive your full payment. Few hours rather as you can't tell me she'd spend the whole day playing with you on the bed."

"You'll have to miss your lectures next Monday and stay there overnight. There's no guarantee you'll be back by Tuesday as she may extend your contract. Get ready for tomorrow, as it's Friday."

"Shût up! You're not a child, you worry too much ahhh. Stop being nêgative. It's late already. Just spend the night here so that after taking your bath in the morning, you return to your hostel. Ginika gulped down saliva and reluctantly laid close to Diana on the bed.

From the 40k that her client had sent her, Ginika purchased some textbooks that she had been wanting to buy because of their high prices. She also copied the assignments from her colleagues and submitted them on that Friday. That week Sunday, her friends invited her to go to church but she couldn't go, as her mind was consumed with the thoughts of the whole situation.

In preparation for her journey, she bought a new, fashionable short black skirt and a light top, which she wore along with some unusual makeup to disguise herself and prevent people from recognizing her before venturing out.

During the journey, Ginika always stayed in touch with both Diana and the woman via phone call. After an hour and a half drive, the first cab dropped Ginika off at a bustling junction known for its various activities at exactly 11am. She had to walk a short distance to find another cab heading in her direction.

Suddenly, three thugs appeared out of nowhere and one of them pointed a pistól at her. They rôbbed her of her phone and any money and other valuables she had. What made the situation even more shocking was that it happened right by the roadside where plenty of people were passing, yet nobody seemed to notice the three thugs surrounding her.

"That's all I have, please," Ginika pleaded.

"Shût up! You don't talk when I'm talking," the menacing thug squeaked at her and quickly hid the gun inside his mãnhoõd region.

"Is there mõnêy inside this ATM card?" One of the voiced out, exhaling the ci******es smokes at her.

Ginika began biting her lips, scattering her hair in confusion and reminiscing on what to say.

"If you lîe eh, I go shõot you asweãr! You hear me ba!!" He threatened.

"Ye... Yes. Please Yes." She answered frightfully, drying her tears.

"How much?"
"Ten.. Twe... Twe... Twenty thousand naira."Ginika stammered.

The menacing one instructed her to f0ll0w him to the girl's pos joint by the left almost close to where the seinna vehicles were loading, in order to withdraw the twenty thousand naira cash and give it to them. As soon as the girl placed her ATM (credit card) in the machine, Ginika grabbed a handful of dûsty sánd and tossed it in the thug's face. She then raised her skirt, picked her high heels and ran as fast as her legs could carry her and they lost sight of her. Ginika ran till she got to a spot where she saw random people leaving with buckets of water. She rushed towards the tap and begged the man for a little.

"What a charming beauty. You live around here?" he said, scanning her body.

"I... I actually came to check on someone." She said exhaling heavily.

"But you're sweating. What's your name? Is someone chasing you? I've not seen your face here before."

"Please sir are you helping me or not? the questions are too much." she said, coughing heavily with her dry throat and hitting her chest with her other hand.

"Anyway, You can drink. They usually pay for the water but just for your sake. the man assured her as he took out his yellow jerrican.

"Thank you," she replied, dropped her high heels, placed both hands under the gushing tap, and began drinking.

When Ginika was in school, life was tough for her family. Her father was also training her elder brother through university, he was reading medicine and then she gained admission too.

During her 100-level first-semester holiday, Ginika woke up one night to use the bathroom and found her father in tears, telling her mother that they might have to ask her to drop out of school so they could focus on her brother that the bills were getting too much on them that they had so many debts to pay.

That moment was a turning point for Ginika and she decided to stop adding to their stress. Her mother found it difficult to discuss their financial struggles with her, as she wouldn't want to deprive her children of their education.. Upon returning to school, Ginika stopped asking her parents for money and took on the responsibility of hustling on her own.

Ginika was a stunning and curvaceous 21-year-old girl. She had never considered using her looks to earn money until a fellow student named Diana shared her struggles with her in a lecture hall, where she found Ginika looking visibly frustrated. "Look at the size of your ãss, Ginika. You have everything they are looking for. All you need to do now is create a social media account to showcase yourself, and you will see how money will start pouring in."

"Do you have a TikTok ãccount?"
"Yes, I do." She answered.

"What about Fãcebook?"
Ginika nodded in response.

"But I can't be doing all those things when my friends and family are monitoring my social media handles? Someone would likely report me."

"Don't worry. All you have to do is to buy a new SIM card and create new ãccounts using a different name. So that when those who recognise you sees you, they'd think it's a scammer with fake profile. Outside that, there are some websites I will introduce you to where clients would be rushing you everyday."

"Okay why not start with the websites first?" Ginika emphasized..

"Alright. After getting your first three clients from the site, you'll pay me 40% from whatever you get deal or no deal?"

"Definitely. Provided something reasonable comes out of it. Diana you have my word."

"I think God brought you to me for a reason. I have so many textbooks and handouts to buy. I don't even know where to start. And asking my family for help would only complicate things."

"I understand, Ginika. We're all struggling to survive. It's not your fault; life just hasn't been fair to us. Imagine if Aliko Dangote was my father. I believe life would have treated us better. We wouldn't have to resort to these street hustles."

"Asweãr."

"What if I told you I had no sponsor would you believe? As weird as it seems, In this university I'm all alone. I'm just 28yrs old."

They exchanged contact information and parted ways. Ginika started working with Diana. After her lectures, Ginika would leave her hostel and stay with Diana in her house, where Diana gradually taught her about the business so she could learn and adapt.

It was after three days, that Ginika got her first client from the site, and it turned out to be a woman. Ginika had never imagined that women would be interested in her.

"Provided she will pay well." Diana stated.

"It's awkward please. I can't imagine myself doing that to a female." Ginika exclaimed worriedly.

"The market is highly competitive because there are thousands of women like you out there also vying for clients. When you secure a client like this, you need to hold onto her tightly," Diana advised....

"But what? Better start preparing yourself. You now have to carry your cross. Nothing comes easily."
