Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) rated lifespan is about 8 to 15 times longer than incandescent bulbs (6000 - 15000 hours). They are basically affected by higher voltages above their stated operating watts and vibrations.
Avoid using CFLs in the following instances:
a) higher wattage CFLs in an enclosed fixtures would possibly last 70% less than its stipulated lifespan.
b) using CFLs in outdoor lightening where the run constantly, weakens their light out put and they last far less than stipulated.
c) they are sensitive to humidity, hence should be shielded in proper fixtures.
d) their lifespan is significantly shorter when they are turned on and off frequently, as is the case with low current (i.e when PHCN decided to play with the light in Nigeria)
Benefits:
1) CFLs energy consumption rate is 25 - 80 % lower than incandescent bulbs, hence less energy bill from PHCN.
2) Though their cost are initially higher to purchase, but the last longer than incandescent bulbs and hence much cheaper over time, plus they would be changed less frequently.

INCANDESCENT BULBS These are the standard bulbs that most people are familiar with. Incandescent bulbs work by using electricity to heat a tungsten filament in the bulb until it glows. The heat makes the filament fragile and wears it off. This part of the filament heats up faster since it has a higher resistance, hence causing the already thinnest part to further thinning.
