When it comes to cooking, there’s one element that will absolutely make or break your dish — salt🧂 . Salt is a vital ingredient — it enhances the flavor of everything it’s added to, from eggs🥚 and meat🥩 to fruit and yes, even sweets🍬.
When your rice🍚 is oversalted, though, you’re not necessarily stuck. There are things you can do to fix the problem and some of them include
1. Add Unsalted Rice🍚
Add half the amount of (unsalted) cooked rice you used into the pot of salty rice. Double the original amount of rice if the rice is very salty. Gently combine both batches thoroughly.
2. Add a Veggie🥕
Mix in some cooked cauliflower (finely chopped), peas, carrots, or avocado. These salt-thirsty ingredients will absorb quite a bit of salt.
An acidic ingredient — like chopped tomato🍅— will further absorb quite a bit of the salty flavor.
3. Add Egg Whites🥚
Egg whites can counteract over salted food. This is also a great hack for adding more nutritious protein to your meals too. Add raw egg whites into your rice, mixing thoroughly. Stir continually over a low heat until the egg whites are thoroughly cooked.
4. Rinse With Hot Water💧
Boil a pot of hot water. Place the salty rice in a strainer. and move it around in the strainer. Pour the hot water the over the rice thoroughly. Shake the excess water out of the strainer. Heat the rice in a skillet to allow some evaporation of water.
*Tips to avoid oversalting*
Of course, the best bet is to avoid oversalting at all😂
Pay attention to the ingredients you’re using. Heavily salted ingredients, such as canned stocks, mean you might not need as much added salt. Always use low- or no-sodium versions so you can control your own sodium content.
And while seasoning as you go is very important, it only counts if you also taste as you go.
Finally, if you can’t taste as you go for food-safety reasons (raw meat or eggs, for example), remember that underseasoning is much easier to fix than the opposite.
