The Story Behind the Design — “Under the Crown of Culture”
At the heart of the design is the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, one of Nigeria’s most recognizable cultural landmarks. The theatre represents a place where stories, music, drama, and African creativity meet. It was closely associated with FESTAC ’77, the historic international festival that brought artists and cultural representatives from Africa and the African diaspora together in Lagos in 1977.

But this artwork goes beyond the building.
The reference to Wole Soyinka’s Death and the King’s Horseman brings Yoruba history, tradition, and literature into the picture. Soyinka’s 1975 play was inspired by a real colonial-era incident involving the horseman of a Yoruba king, making it a powerful reflection on culture, duty, tradition, and the collision between African customcolonial authority.
Then comes Fela’s Kalakuta Republic—a symbol of freedom, rebellion, and fearless expression. Fela turned his home and creative community into what he called the Kalakuta Republic, using music as a voice against oppression and military rule. Its destruction in 1977 became one of the most painful chapters in Nigeria’s cultural history, but it never destroyed the message behind the music.

That is why people walking toward the theatre are important.
They represent the next generation walking into the story.
Not just spectators.
Carriers of culture.
Keepers of history.
Creators of tomorrow.
The moonlit Lagos setting gives the artwork a nostalgic feeling—as if the past is looking down on the present, reminding us that every generation inherits something from those before it.
Why “EL CHEN”?
The bold EL CHEN typography gives the design a vintage sportswear/poster character while still allowing the Nigerian cultural imagery to dominate. The red, black, and white treatment gives it strength, while the warm golden lighting of the theatre brings softness and nostalgia.
And the line at the bottom says it all:
“UNDER THE CROWN OF CULTURE — IGANMU SPEAKS.”
