THEY MOCKED HIM AND WALKED AWAY... MOMENTS LATER, THE IMPOSSIBLE HAPPENED

Imagine spending hours preparing to preach the Word of God, only for the people to laugh at you, reject your message, and walk away.

Most people would have been discouraged.

But not St. Anthony of Padua.

According to the traditional accounts of his life, St. Anthony travelled to the town of Rimini in Italy to preach the Gospel. Sadly, many of the people refused to listen. Some mocked him. Others turned their backs and walked away without giving him a chance to speak.

Instead of arguing with them or forcing them to stay, Anthony quietly walked towards the seashore.

The few people who remained watched in confusion.

What was he about to do?

Standing at the edge of the sea, St. Anthony lifted his voice and began preaching...

Not to the people.

But to the fish.

Then something extraordinary was reported to have happened.

Fish of every size began gathering near the shore in astonishing numbers. According to the traditional accounts, they raised their heads above the water and remained still, as though listening attentively to every word he spoke. Those who witnessed the scene were left speechless.

News spread quickly.

The very people who had mocked him came running back to the shore. Seeing what was happening, many were deeply moved, repented, and asked to hear St. Anthony preach the Gospel.

This remarkable event has been handed down for centuries in the traditions surrounding St. Anthony's life. Its message is as powerful today as it was then: when human hearts refuse to listen to God's Word, all creation still bears witness to His glory.

St. Anthony became one of the Church's greatest preachers, renowned for his wisdom, holiness, and the countless favours attributed to his intercession. Today, millions of Catholics around the world seek his prayers, especially when they have lost something precious.

Yet perhaps his greatest gift was not helping people find lost possessions

St. Anthony of Padua

The patron saint of Portugal; Padua, Italy; and lost things St. Anthony of Padua (1195–1231) depicted with a lily in his right hand and the child Jesus on a book in his left.

St. Anthony of Padua (born 1195, Lisbon, Portugal—died June 13, 1231, Arcella, Verona [Italy]; canonized 1232; feast day June 13) was a Franciscan friar and a dedicated patron of the poor. Portugal and the city of Padua, Italy, claim him as their patron saint, and he is invoked for the return of lost property. He is also the patron saint of sailors, fisherfolk, priests, and travelers. For his theological knowledge and missionary work, Anthony has been proclaimed a doctor of the church.

Unfailing Prayer to St. Anthony of Padua

O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and Charity for His creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Encouraged by this thought, I implore you to obtain for me (request). O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Amen.
