Can Narration on Bank Transfers Save you From the Taxman?

Short answer: NO.
Long answer: Narration can help, but it does NOT decide tax.

Let me explain it in clear Nigerian sense.

DOES BANK TRANSFER NARRATION DECIDE TAX?

No. Narration does not determine whether money is taxable or not.

Tax is decided by the nature of the money, not what you typed in the narration.

You can write:
• “Gift”
• “Support”
• “Urgent 2k”
• “For food”
• “Family help”

If the money is actually income, it is still taxable.

WHY NARRATION DOES NOT SAVE YOU

Banks don’t assess tax.
FIRS and state tax authorities do.
Banks don’t deduct your money automatically. They are not tax collectors. (Will write a post on this later.)

When tax people look at your account, they don’t just read narration. They check:
• Frequency of inflow
• Pattern
• Amount
• Source
• Consistency
• Connection to your known activity

Narration is the weakest evidence.

EXAMPLES (VERY IMPORTANT)

Example 1: Real gift (Not taxable)

Your father sends you N500,000 once.
Narration: “Birthday gift”

✔ Irregular
✔ From family
✔ No business pattern

Usually not taxable.

Example 2: Fake “gift” (Taxable)

10 different people send you:
• N50k
• N100k
• N200k
Every week

Narration:
• “Support”
• “Blessing”
• “God bless you”

But you are:
• A content creator
• A coach
• A vendor

❌ That is income.
Narration cannot save you.

Example 3: Brand deal

A company sends you N2 million.
Narration: “Collaboration support”

That is:
✔ Payment for service
✔ Commercial
✔ Taxable

Narration doesn’t change reality.

Example 4: Refund or reimbursement

You spent N300k for someone
They pay you back N300k

Narration: “Refund”

✔ That is not income
✔ That is not taxable

But you must be able to prove it.

THE RULE TAX PEOPLE USE:

Tax authorities ask one main question:

“Why was this money paid to you?”

Not:

“What did you write in the narration?”

WHEN NARRATION CAN HELP (BUT NOT DECIDE)

Narration can help only if:
• It matches reality
• You have evidence
• It aligns with your records

For example:
• Loan agreement
• Gift deed
• Refund receipt
• Family support evidence

Narration supports documents.
Narration alone is useless.

BIGGEST MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE

Thinking:

“As long as I write ‘gift’, government can’t tax me.”

That is a WhatsApp myth.

If narration decided tax:
• Everybody would write “gift”
• Government would collect zero tax

Life doesn’t work that way.

STREET SUMMARY

Narration is explanation, not protection.
Evidence beats narration.
Pattern beats narration.
Reality beats narration.

SMART ADVICE:

If money is:
• Business income - declare it
• Gift - keep proof
• Loan - document it
• Refund - record it

Don’t rely on narration to hide income.
That trick stopped working long ago.

I will make another post on how tax authorities actually analyze bank statements.

Remember, whether you like the Tinubu tax or not, you have to get educated about how tax laws work.
